How to grow roots on potted orchids

For potted orchids, we first need to understand their growth habits, and then scientifically and reasonably create growing conditions for them based on those habits. When cultivating orchids, we should not only keep them alive but also strive to grow them well, producing a highly ornamental state and allowing them to reach their greatest potential. This is exactly the result we as potted plant enthusiasts hope for.

An excellent potted orchid not only has strong roots and lush leaves but also has very high ornamental value and artistic charm. How to grow strong roots is the first problem we need to solve, because the quality of the roots directly affects the growth of the orchid plant and even determines how well its ornamental value is displayed. So, what then? Through practice, the editor has summarized a fairly complete set of root-growing techniques and now shares them with everyone.

I. Growing medium

A good growing medium environment is the basic condition for growing strong orchid roots, and native soil is recommended. However, after all, as a household potted orchid, the care environment naturally cannot compare with the wild growing environment, and it is even less possible to move household potted orchids to the wild for care and management. Therefore, we can only formulate the growing medium as much as possible from the perspective of what is suitable for the growth of the orchid plant.

The growing medium for orchids should be fertile and loose, breathable and permeable, and able to retain water and fertilizer. As long as we can create such a growing environment for them, we usually provide good basic growing conditions for the orchid plant. Specifically, we can formulate the growing medium for orchid plants according to the following plan:

Select Kanuma soil, Sendai soil, leaf mold, bark chunks and firewood, then mix them in a ratio of 3:4:2:1. As long as everyone can strictly follow this method to formulate the growing medium, it can create a good environment for promoting roots, nourishing roots and strengthening roots for orchid plants.

II. Fertilizing

Fertilizing is also very critical for growing orchids, because whether fertilizer is applied well or not directly affects the sprouting and growth state of the root system. In particular, an appropriate amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer needs to be supplemented, as this is the main nutrient for cultivating orchid roots. The recommended practices are:

1. Mix an appropriate amount of substances such as bone meal into the orchid pot's growing medium to supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and also use it as a base fertilizer.

2. For ordinary watering, it is advisable to use some potassium dihydrogen phosphate. Before use, mix it into a dilute solution and ensure the pH value is between 5.5-6.5, so that the water contains a thin amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Apply thin fertilizer frequently to achieve the goal of strengthening roots.

3. During topdressing, it is advisable to take in a small amount of potassium dihydrogen phosphate as the main nutrient for strengthening roots.

III. Dry cultivation

The ancients said that in orchid growing, moisture promotes buds and dryness promotes roots. Spring is the peak season for orchid growth, and the humidity of the growing environment can be appropriately increased to prompt the orchid plant to sprout new buds. When the new buds grow to a certain height, watering can be appropriately controlled, and it is advisable to keep the growing medium on the drier side. The main purpose of doing this is to promote the sprouting and growth of new roots on the orchid plant. More importantly, this method allows young orchid plants to safely and smoothly separate from the old plant and maintain healthy growth on their own.

IV. Pruning

Growing orchids requires regularly repotting, or even changing the soil, and root trimming is usually needed when repotting. The purpose of doing this is to promote the sprouting of new roots by cutting off old, weak and diseased roots and fine root systems, and to improve the root's ability to absorb, which is also very beneficial for promoting the plant to sprout and send out leaves. This is what we often call the theory of trimming roots to promote buds.

In short, the foundation of growing orchids well lies in growing roots and promoting buds. Only when the orchid plant's root system is grown strong and well can it branch out and spread leaves, allowing the potted orchid to present a scene of strong roots and lush branches and leaves. It can be seen that growing roots is of very important significance for growing orchids well.
