Daxuesu, the foremost of the four great famous Yunnan orchids, a broad-leaved lotus-petal white-flower pure-center variety with 6-7 leaves, leaf width 0.8-1.5cm, leaf height 20-70cm, bearing 2-4 flowers, blooming period January-February.
Characteristics of Daxuesu and differences among its varieties:
Yunnan Daxuesu has a history of more than a hundred years of domestication and cultivation. Its blooming period is January to March, the flowers are snow-white, with multiple flowers on one stem, at least three and at most seven, commonly four to five. The petals are 3.5-4CM long, making it a relatively long lotus-type flower, large and held above the foliage.
Grand and spectacular. Daxuesu is easy to cultivate and blooms very readily, with a pure and subtly far-reaching fragrance, and is deeply loved by orchid enthusiasts everywhere. It has won countless awards at orchid shows at home and abroad.
Daxuesu is usually divided into three types by place of origin: Shigu type, Heqing type, and Weishan type.
The Shigu type of Daxuesu is produced in Shigu Town, Lijiang region, with a plant height of 30-35CM, leaf length 50-70CM, leaf width 1.2-1.5CM, and 7-8 leaves per plant. This type has a tall and large leaf form, with the leaves drooping in an orderly curve, giving the whole plant a solemn and tension-filled feel. The flowers are large and white; the only shortcoming is that the water-stain mark on the lip is slightly heavier. Among the Shigu types there is also a peach-cheek pure type, with the same leaf shape and flower shape as above, except that there is a faint red color above the lateral lobes of the lip, while the rest is pure white.
The Heqing type of Daxuesu is produced in Heqing County, with a plant height of 25-30CM, leaf length 40-50CM, width 1.2CM, and 7-8 leaves per plant, with drooping leaves in a phoenix-tail shape. The water-stain mark on the lip is relatively faint.
The Weishan type of Daxuesu is produced in Weishan County, also known as Yuandan Lan, with leaf length 40-60CM, width 1.2-1.5CM, and 7-9 leaves per plant, with a ring-curved leaf shape, also called jade-ring shape, the leaves draping over the edge of the pot, and the flowers held far above the leaf surface, very graceful. The water-stain mark on the lip is relatively faint. Among the Weishan types there is also a fully pure variety, which is extremely rare.
In addition, there is another upright-leaf type of Daxuesu, with leaf length 20-30CM, width 1.0-1.2CM, and leaves standing upright like sharp swords pointing to the sky, strong and powerful, very spirited.

The growth habits of orchids do not differ according to variety. Regardless of variety, their living and growth habits are basically much the same, with only slight changes because orchids from different places have adapted over the long term, such as varieties native to the south and tropics being less cold-tolerant than varieties native to the north, and that is all. Daxuesu, commonly known as Da Suxin, also called Yuandan, belongs to the terrestrial orchid group. There are commonly five or six variant varieties, all horticultural cultivated variants, originally produced in parts of Yunnan. Because the flower structure is almost identical, Daxuesu and Yuandan Lan are customarily regarded as the same species, but from the leaf shape there are obvious differences, and the possibility of various variants still appearing remains. It is an independent variety.
How to distinguish 'Xiaoxuesu' from 'Daxuesu'
'Xiaoxuesu' and 'Daxuesu' both belong to the traditional pure-center varieties of the lotus-petal orchid, and at first glance the two are almost impossible to tell apart, but on closer inspection there are still differences. 'Xiaoxuesu' has relatively narrow leaves, with an obliquely upright leaf posture that does not curve or droop, snow-white flower color, and smaller flowers. By contrast, 'Daxuesu' has a taller and larger plant, with leaves that are also wider and longer, but drooping below the middle; its flowers are larger and snow-white, and because it mainly blooms at New Year's Day it is also called Yuandan Lan.
