What fertilizer to use for water lily base fertilizer

Potted water lilies have very high ornamental value, but the potted growing environment is often limited by space, and the nutrients in the pot mud are also very limited. Water lilies are also flowering plants that are quite fond of fertilizer, so timely nutrient supplementation is very important for their growth and flowering. First of all, when we plant them in pots and establish them, we need to apply sufficient base fertilizer, so what then?

For potted water lilies, it is generally recommended to use pond mud as the substrate, because pond mud is not only very soft and loose, which is very conducive to the extension and distribution of water lily roots, but the nutrients in pond mud are also very rich and comprehensive. Using it to grow water lilies is simply the best. But if used as base fertilizer, we also need to choose suitable fertilizer. Not just any fertilizer can be used to make base fertilizer for water lilies.

For materials used as base fertilizer for flowering plants, traditionally animal hoof pieces can be used, and fermented and thoroughly decomposed farm organic fertilizer can also be used. Common farm organic fertilizers can be eggshells, animal bones, soybean cake oil residue, animal manure, etc. But before use, the amount must be controlled well, and it must not come into direct contact with the plant roots, otherwise fertilizer burn may occur.

However, it is worth noting that although water lilies are fertilizer-loving flowering plants, and even need fertilization to bloom smoothly, they are very sensitive to fertilizer. If fertilizer is insufficient, it will not only affect their normal growth, but may even severely inhibit flowering. So for home potted cultivation, it is recommended to apply sufficient base fertilizer. But if too much fertilizer is used, or if the fertilizer comes into direct contact with the plant, it is also relatively easy to burn the plant roots.

For potted water lilies, if we use pond mud as the substrate and apply sufficient base fertilizer in the early growth stage, then very little topdressing is needed later, and topdressing may even be unnecessary. It is only necessary to wait until near the flowering period and apply some potassium dihydrogen phosphate to ensure that attractive flowers bloom smoothly as scheduled. Applying base fertilizer to water lilies is generally done in the early growth stage. When planting and establishing them in pots, it is not necessary to fertilize the pot mud, and fertilization is also not advisable.

Of course, in addition to using the fertilizer types listed above as base fertilizer or foundation fertilizer for water lilies, we can also use compound fertilizer and phosphorus-potassium fertilizer, but generally we need to wait until the plant produces standing leaves before starting to apply nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer to ensure the plant can grow better. If we did not apply base fertilizer for the water lilies in the early stage, then later we must strengthen topdressing, so as to both ensure the plant can grow well and allow it to bloom smoothly.
