How to make a rubber plant grow more side branches, and can you notch the main trunk to force buds

I. How to make a rubber plant grow more side branches

If you want a rubber plant to grow more side branches, the most effective and simplest method is to chop off the top, which forces the rubber plant to push out new buds again.

1. Chopping off the top: Prepare a pair of garden shears and cut the rubber plant clean through at mid-height, keeping about 50cm of the branch base. The cut can be sealed with the wax oil produced by a burning candle to prevent the branch from losing water and getting infected by bacteria, and all the leaves on the branch should be removed.

2. Care: Place the topped rubber plant in a spot with bright, indirect light and good ventilation. After about a month, the rubber plant will sprout new stems and leaves from the bud points on the branch. After budding, the plant will grow rapidly, and in three to four months, the rubber plant can grow into a new potted plant with plenty of side branches.

3. Cuttings: Do not throw away the rubber plant branches you trimmed off either. Let the cut end of the fresh branch dry, insert it into moist potting soil, and place it in a cool, ventilated spot, keeping the soil slightly moist. Once the branch takes root, it can also be grown into a new rubber plant.

II. Can you notch the main trunk of a rubber plant to force buds

A rubber plant can be notched to force buds, but you must make sure the branch has a certain thickness. At a spot 0.5-1cm above a bud point on the branch, use a small knife to make a cut with a length equal to half the circumference of the branch, and the depth of the notch should be just enough to cut through the bark. Do this when it is warm in spring, and the rubber plant will quickly send out side buds.
