What are the key steps in the prevention and control of blue ear disease?
Do you know the several key steps in the prevention and control of blue ear disease?
Generally, it first spreads slowly among some pig herds from March to April, with the outbreak period from June to September, ending from the end of October to the beginning of December. At this time, close attention must be paid to the movements of the pig herd.
Clinical diagnosis of blue ear disease
Generally, staging it as follows is more helpful for early clinical confirmation of blue ear disease, so as to seize the opportunitytreatment, and gain a more accurate understanding of blue ear disease.
1) Sows show reduced appetite, prefer to lie down, have varying degrees of coughing and wheezing, and often suffer abortions, mummified fetuses and a high rate of weak piglets. Some piglets show difficulty breathing, poor coordination and splayed legs, and some piglets show ulceration of the umbilical cord and tail. Piglet mortality within one week is relatively high, reaching 40%--80%.
2) In nursery pigs, generally after body temperature rises for 3-5 days, they show reduced or complete loss of appetite, gradually worsening coughing, increased nasal discharge, and more filth stuck around the snout. Some pigs show abdominal breathing, flushed skin, and eyelid edema, etc.
Some pig herds develop stubborn diarrhea, with prominent symptoms of thirst. In severe cases, some pigs show purpling of the ears, neck and other parts of the body, vomiting, convulsions and circling, and weak and paralyzed hind limbs. The mortality rate reaches 20%--40%.
3) Finishing pigs are less susceptible, showing only anorexia and difficulty breathing. A few develop cyanosis of the ears and purplish-red hemorrhagic patches on the back and abdomen, and are prone to secondary mixed infection with pleuropneumonia and mycoplasma pneumonia.

Prevention and control of blue ear disease.
1) Purify the rearing environment
Strictly implement the disinfection system, spray empty pens with 3% caustic soda, and wash one day later; during an epidemic, disinfectant solutions such as glutaraldehyde and povidone-iodine can be used in increased amounts for spray disinfection with pigs present l~2 times, including thoroughly disinfecting the tools in the pig house once a day.
Strengthen feeding management, adjust the pig herd in a timely manner, improve ventilation and lighting in the pig house, and reduce the stocking density of the pig herd to 1.5 sq m per finishing pig. Sows that abort, have stillbirths, or do not come into estrus should be culled in a timely manner to purify the pig farm of blue ear disease.
2) Scientific immunization
Formulate a scientific immunization program, effectively carry out prevention of routine diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, swine fever, circovirus disease and pseudorabies, and try to eliminate the occurrence of epidemics.
For pig farms with a high incidence of blue ear disease, conduct pathogen testing and vaccinate with vaccines of the same or closely related variant strains. Blue ear vaccination is not recommended for pregnant sows, as it easily causes mechanical abortion. At the same time, in the middle and late stages, the virus may infect piglets through the placenta, causing a high rate of weak piglets and infection of suckling piglets.
3) Drugs recommended by Teacher Tian of Saike Groupprevention and control
Traditional Chinese medicines such as astragalus, coptis, scutellaria, ganoderma, isatis root, honeysuckle and shencao have broad-spectrum antiviral effects and inhibit viral mutation. They mainly act in the early and middle stages of infection and have notable effects against mixed viral and bacterial infections.
In addition, they have antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects, clear heat and cool blood, enhance immunity, repair the immune system and improve microcirculation. At the same time, combined with tilmicosin and tylvalosin to enhance the activity of lung macrophages and block the replication of the blue ear virus, ultimately achieving purification, treatmentand control of blue ear disease.
