What should you do if a sow has purulent discharge? Don't panic, the treatment methods are here

Why does a sow have purulent discharge after mating

(1) If it flows out soon after mating, this situation should mean the sow already had uterine inflammation. The secretions flowed out of the vagina after being diluted by the semen.

(2) If it flows out during the next estrus after mating, the sow should have contracted uterine inflammation at the time of mating. When estrus arrives, the cervix opens and the thick purulent secretions inside flow out.

Preventive measures:

For prevention, in addition to routine disinfection, pre-farrowing disinfection and post-farrowing anti-inflammatory treatment for the sow should also be taken seriously. Before mating, the sow's vulva and the boar's abdominal prepuce must both be disinfected. When performing artificial insemination, the equipment must be well protected from contamination.

Treatment: Before mating, you can prepare 100 ml of 5% normal saline plus 2 g of 2% ciprofloxacin hydrochloride water-soluble powder.

Uterine flushing method:

(1) Use 500 ml of normal saline plus 2.4 million units of penicillin plus 2 million of streptomycin

(2) Flush with Gongyanjing and 0.1% potassium permanganate solution, and also add Chinese herbal medicines such as motherwort (Leonurus japonicus) to the sow's feed to eliminate inflammation.
