How to deal with and remedy yellowing leaves on a money tree

The money tree (Pachira aquatica) is a green plant often kept in many homes and offices, not only to invite good fortune and wealth, but also to bring a touch of greenery to the home and office, and it can even purify the air. However, the money tree is also rather difficult to grow, and the most common problem is yellowing leaves. If the leaves do turn yellow, what should you do? Here are the causes of yellowing leaves on a money tree and the solutions:

1. Watering a money tree too much will cause its leaves to turn yellow. So when growing one, pay attention to how much you water. If you have been watering too much, stop doing so. The basis for watering is to look at the surface of the money tree's soil: when there is dry soil, it is time to water.

2. Just as too much water makes the leaves turn yellow, too little water will naturally also cause yellowing leaves. You can judge for yourself: if the leaves turn yellow after you go several days without watering, then at this point you should judge how much to water based on whether the surface soil is dry or moist.

3. The money tree is a fairly drought-tolerant plant, but it is a plant that dislikes harsh sun exposure. So in summer, people who grow money trees think that letting it sit in the sun will make it grow better, but that is wrong; harsh sun exposure will only make the money tree's leaves turn yellow.

4. A money tree cannot be exposed to harsh sun, yet it also cannot go without sunlight. A money tree that gets no sunlight will also turn yellow. It is best to place the money tree at a distance from the balcony that is neither too close nor too far, just enough for the sunlight to scatter over it at a slant.

5. Look carefully at how the money tree's leaves are turning yellow. If you find aphids, or traces of insects having bitten or crawled on them, that proves your money tree has a pest or disease problem. At this point, it is advisable to find a horticulturist and have them give you insecticide.

6. Even if the money tree is merely wilting, especially at noon in summer, absolutely do not water it; be sure to wait until the sun sets before watering. If you water it under high temperatures, it will only burn the roots, causing the leaves to turn yellow and essentially ruining the plant.

7. The growth of a money tree requires nitrogen-based fertilizer or nutrient elements. Therefore, it is advisable to apply a nitrogen-containing fertilizer every so often; otherwise, without nutrients, its leaves will also turn yellow.

8. When your money tree is growing very well, in that state it is advisable to prune it, so that it does not develop yellow leaves from excessive competition caused by luxuriant branches and foliage.
