How to Care for Potted Lilies After They Finish Blooming

Lilies have a fairly long blooming period, usually flowering from April to July, and how long they bloom depends on the variety chosen and the planting time. From planting to blooming usually takes 3-4 months. A lily in bloom is incomparably lovely and radiantly beautiful, so many growers hope it will bloom on schedule the following year and give them another chance to admire its beauty. That being so, we must do a good job of the post-bloom care and management.

Since the lily is a bulb plant, care and management before blooming are essential. Before it blooms, do not move the pot, and even more importantly do not touch the plant, especially the buds, mainly to avoid premature bud formation and premature drop. Of course, watering must also be controlled; do not water heavily or flood it. Generally you should wait until the potting soil is completely dry before watering it by spraying. This ensures normal blooming on schedule without anything going wrong.

During the blooming period, its care and management also require attention. To extend the blooming period, we can buy some cut-flower preservative solution from a florist supply shop. Of course, it is not absolutely necessary to buy it; using rice-washing water from home is also feasible, because rice-washing water is relatively rich in nutrients, and applying it is very beneficial to the plant's growth.

The main event is still after blooming, because whether the management after the lily withers is scientific and thorough will directly affect next year's growth and blooming results. First, to avoid excessive consumption of nutrients, we should promptly remove the spent flowers and prune appropriately, keeping a height of 20-30 cm. At this time, avoid overwatering, otherwise the lower leaves of the plant easily drop off.

If you accidentally overwater, on the one hand drain promptly, and on the other hand prune more lightly than usual, that is, keep the height appropriately longer than the previous baseline, while retaining a small number of leaves and avoiding keeping only the stem portion. So in this step, watering must be well controlled, especially avoiding too much water; if water accumulates, it can easily cause root rot.

In addition, after blooming we should also apply appropriate supplementary fertilizer: once a week with Huaduoduo, once a month with a compound fertilizer, both preferably applied as a diluted, low-concentration drench, because concentrated fertilizer easily causes fertilizer burn and damages the plant. Just follow the fertilizer instructions.

After winter arrives, the lily plant will gradually turn yellow and withered. At this time, avoid sun and rain; it is recommended to move it to a balcony where it can escape rain and also avoid direct sunlight, and at the same time stop water and fertilizer. If the potting soil is too dry, you can add a small amount of water. This process can continue until the beginning of spring the following year.
