What to Do When Schefflera Keeps Dropping Leaves? Causes and Solutions

Schefflera, also known as the umbrella tree, is a highly ornamental evergreen plant that is very appealing when grown as a potted specimen indoors. However, it can sometimes drop leaves due to inadequate care on our part. Why does an otherwise healthy potted plant keep losing its leaves?
When a schefflera keeps dropping leaves, it may be caused by two factors. One is rushing to water it right after bringing it home, when the plant is precisely in its acclimation period; watering too early will trigger leaf drop. It is best to first place it in a ventilated spot with plenty of indirect light to acclimate for about a week, and during this time do not move it around frequently, then gradually give it a moderate amount of water; this can reduce leaf drop.
The other factor may be a poorly chosen location for the schefflera. If the environment is too shady and lacking light, or if direct light is too intense, it will likewise cause a large amount of leaf drop. Although the schefflera has a certain tolerance for shade and also likes a bright environment with semi-shade and plenty of indirect light, long-term excessive shade and lack of light are not conducive to its growth.
If direct light is too intense, it is also bad for its growth, and first of all it contradicts its light requirements. But in this situation, we cannot suddenly move it from direct light to a low-light spot. Doing so will only worsen the degree of leaf drop and do no good for the plant's recovery. Instead, we should gradually reduce the light and let it slowly adapt to the process.
Of course, besides the above two situations, other causes may also be responsible, such as improper water and fertilizer management, which can still cause leaf drop, especially in cases of root rot, where the plant will not only drop leaves but also develop yellow leaves and dried branches and foliage, and in severe cases may even die. Therefore, in our daily care, we must pay attention to method, observe the plant's growth condition more often, and then adopt scientific care practices; only in this way can we ensure the plant does not drop leaves and also grows with lush branches and green foliage.
