Can Phalaenopsis orchids be grown in coconut husk?

Can coconut husk be used to grow Phalaenopsis orchids?

Phalaenopsis orchids have fleshy roots and like a loose, airy substrate, but they are also intolerant of waterlogging, so the substrate we prepare is usually also required to be highly permeable and not prone to causing water accumulation in the pot; otherwise, it will not only inhibit the root respiration of the Phalaenopsis but also cause root rot.

Everyone knows that coconut husk is not only highly permeable but also very airy, and it itself has a certain ability to absorb and retain water. Perhaps many growers think coconut husk can be used directly to grow Phalaenopsis. But in fact, coconut husk cannot be used directly to grow Phalaenopsis. Why is that?

This is mainly because coconut husk chunks are relatively large in volume, and when placed in a pot they are too loose, leaving gaps that are too large and too numerous, so the Phalaenopsis roots poorly, which naturally leads to poor root growth. If you really want to use coconut husk to grow them, it is also not recommended to use it alone, but rather together with other growing media such as peat soil or leaf mold.

In this case, you can put peat soil or leaf mold in the lower layer for the Phalaenopsis to root into, and spread the coconut husk in the upper layer. This way, too many and too large gaps will not form around the plant's roots in the pot, which is more conducive to root growth and will naturally improve the roots' ability to absorb.

Of course, it is usually recommended to replace the coconut husk with coconut coir, and then mix it with growing media such as peat soil to make a mixed substrate for use as the potting soil for Phalaenopsis, which often works much better. In this way, the potting soil is not only highly loose and airy, but can also provide quite a few nutrients from the soil. If only coconut husk is used to grow Phalaenopsis, it is generally not easy to grow them well.
