What to do about rectal prolapse in pigs? Simple treatment methods for each stage are very effective
Simple treatment of rectal prolapse in pigs at each stage, tried and tested every time!
Long-term malnutrition and weak constitution;
The sick pig has congenital poor development and stubborn diarrhea;
Caused by excessive recoil when coughing;
Caused by straining during defecation due to diarrhea or constipation, with excessive straining of the anus;
Because the pig often sits when paralyzed, the abdominal pressure increases over the long term;
When trying to stand up forcibly, the anus is strained along with it, causing the rectum to prolapse.
Poor feeding management and high humidity;
Cold winter weather and low temperature in the pig house.
2. Clinical symptoms
The rectum prolapses out of the anus and appears spherical. At the beginning, the rectal mucosa is congested and red; after a long time it becomes edematous, congested, and dark red, with mud attached, and there are varying degrees of trauma. In the later stage of the disease, the mucosa ruptures, the rectum becomes necrotic, defecation is difficult, the pig is listless, and appetite decreases or is completely lost. Pigs with severe rectal prolapse are prone to death.
3、TreatmentMethods
For pigs with rectal prolapse, surgical reduction should be performed. Before surgery, control the sick pig's feed intake and encourage it to empty its feces and urine.
① During surgery, suspend the sick pig upside down for restraint, wash the skin around the anus, the tail root, and the legs with soapy water, and rinse and disinfect the prolapsed rectal mucosa with 0.1% potassium permanganate solution or 2%-5% alum water or light salt water. Release the edematous fluid by squeezing, then apply antibiotic ointment such as erythromycin or penicillin powder. Use gauze soaked in warm normal saline or clean warm water for hot compress, press the prolapsed area to reduce the prolapsed rectum, and then perform a purse-string suture on the anus, with appropriate tightness. If too tight, it hinders defecation; if too loose, it easily causes repeated rectal prolapse.

PS tip:
For some large pigs, performing suture surgery is rather tiring, so here is a little trick to share (only for the early stage of the disease). When the pig defecates, the intestine comes out a little and retracts very slowly, or a little bit is exposed outside and cannot go back in. At this time, go to a human pharmacy and buy a box of hemorrhoid suppositories, take out one pill, insert it into the pig's anus, and at the same time push the intestine back in, twice a day. Most of the time it improves in one day, and sometimes it takes two or three days! If it is already very severe, surgical suturing must be performed.
Note that it is best to insert it after seeing the pig finish defecating. If the pig defecates shortly after insertion, then you can find that hemorrhoid suppository in the feces, rinse it with cold water, and insert it again after defecation is complete! Rinsing with cold water is to cool the hemorrhoid suppository. At body temperature the hemorrhoid suppository will be in a semi-melted state, and the soft one cannot be inserted, you know what I mean. So before inserting it again, cool it with cold water. Finally, a reminder: whether or not to wear disposable gloves is up to you.
② For sick pigs with severe rectal prolapse, rectal necrosis, and serosal perforation, resection and suturing of the prolapsed rectum should be performed. During surgery, mix 40 ml-60 ml of 1% procaine with 1 ml of 0.1% adrenaline. Select the Houhai acupoint (the depression above the anus and below the tail root), inject 20 ml-30 ml each time. The operator uses two suture threads to pass through the prolapsed rectum in a cross shape behind the affected area, taking care to avoid thicker blood vessels when threading, then carefully resects the necrotic rectum about 1 cm away from the suture line. For the inner and outer intestinal tubes (during surgery, take care not to trap or injure the small intestine; if small blood vessels bleed, gauze compression and hemostatic forceps can be used to stop the bleeding), use forceps to pull the suture thread out from the rectal cavity, cut it at the center of the suture line to form 4 threads, and tie each one separately to fix it, that is, perform nodular suturing of the two layers of intestinal wall between the 4 knots, and suture the broken ends of the inner and outer (two-layer) intestinal tubes at a distance of 5.5 cm. After suturing is complete, cut off the fixation and traction threads.
4. Postoperative care
(1) After surgery, the sick pig is given intramuscular injections of penicillin and streptomycin twice a day for 3 consecutive days. The dosage depends on the body weight of the sick pig and should be used according to the dosage in the drug instructions, or 0.1% oxytetracycline can be added to the diet for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory purposes.
(2) After surgery, the sick pig's food is controlled for 1 day-2 days. During this period, 10% glucose water can be fed, liquid feed should be gradually increased, and the normal daily feeding amount can be restored after 7 days.
For severe rectal prolapse in piglets, it is recommended to perform suture surgery promptly. For mild cases, dried mugwort can be lit to fumigate the pig's Houhai acupoint and the protruding part.
5. Preventive measures:
Strengthen feeding management, do a good job in disinfection, hygiene, drying, and heat preservation of the pig house, and promptlytreatrespiratory and digestive tract diseases. First feed a full-price feed with good palatability and easy digestion, and eliminate all predisposing causes.
When constipation is found in pigs, promptlytreatit, add traditional Chinese medicine for tonifying the middle and replenishing qi to the diet. If the constipation is caused by internal toxins (most rectal prolapse in sows is related to mold), add mold removers and multivitamins. (Source: Happy Pig Farming)
