What to Do About Bloat in Pigs That Causes Death? You Need to Know the Causes and Prevention and Control Methods
What to Do About Fatal Pig Bloat? You Need to Know the Causes and Prevention and Control Methods
Causes
1. Improper feeding
Under the high-temperature and high-humidity environment of summer, feed is prone to mold. When pigs eat moldy feed, it promotes the rapid reproduction of Clostridium welchii in the intestinal tract, producing large amounts of toxic and harmful gases, causing bloat, while also pressing on the internal organs, leading to disordered blood circulation, and ultimately death by suffocation due to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain.
Overfeeding weakens digestive function, causing a large amount of gas in the gastrointestinal tract to be unable to be expelled, and can also cause flatulence.
2. Constipation
Insufficient supply of green, succulent feed or reduced exercise in the pig herd, and reduced feed intake in the pig herd due to the occurrence of febrile diseases, lead to constipation, and constipation causes bloat.
Sows are more likely than other pigs to develop bloat due to constipation, but in most pigs the bloat can be relieved after a bowel movement.

3. Viral pathogenic bloat
The virus that mainly causes pig bloat is transmissible gastroenteritis virus. Pigs of different ages can all be infected with this disease, and both the morbidity and mortality rates of suckling piglets are very high. The younger the age, the shorter the course of disease and the higher the mortality rate.
This disease is somewhat contagious and can be spread through infected pigs. It is endemic and periodic, and also has obvious seasonality, occurring mainly in winter and spring.
⟧Pig bloatprevention and controlmeasures
I. Strengthen prevention
First, we should adjust the feeding and management model, minimize stress stimuli as much as possible, and avoid adverse stress reactions. Daily feed for pigs should have a moderate particle size, otherwise it will cause problems in the pig's digestive system.
In addition, we can also add green feed rich in fiber to speed up the gastrointestinal motility of pigs, so as to avoid excessive reproduction of anaerobic bacteria.
Second, in late autumn or early spring each year or during periods with more temperature fluctuations, an appropriate amount of baking soda can be added to their diet and used continuously for 7 days, which can effectively prevent disease caused by weather changes.
In addition, pigs should usually be provided with easily digestible feed, otherwise it will cause digestive difficulties in pigs.
II. Symptomatictreatment
In the early stage of bloat, tylosin and compound vitamin B can be injected intramuscularly, and at the same time 50 ml per dose of vegetable oil can be used fortreatment。
A sodium sulfate solution can also be injected to inhibit the fermentation of harmful gases in the gastrointestinal tract. At the same time, increasing the exercise of affected pigs can promote the rapid expulsion of gas in their gastrointestinal tract.
The incidence of pig bloat is low, but the mortality rate is high. Pig farms should pay attention to it, do a good job of prevention in ordinary times, and observe carefully so as to detect it early andtreat it early。
