What to Do If a Pig's Snout Is Crooked? Cause Analysis and Prevention and Treatment Methods
What should be done if a pig's snout is crooked?
Treatment: first, improve air quality; second, administer sulfonamide nasal drops; third, give intramuscular injections of sensitive antibiotics; fourth, carry out whole-herd prevention.
Clinically, pigs with crooked snouts mostly have infectious atrophic rhinitis. Infectious atrophic rhinitis is a chronic contagious respiratory infectious disease caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica and toxigenic Pasteurella multocida.
It is characterized by rhinitis and distortion of the nasal septum. Clinical manifestations include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and facial deformation or deviation.

Clinical symptoms
Bordetella bronchiseptica: mostly occurs in nursery pigs at 3-4 weeks of age, with clinical manifestations of sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, and runny nose. For this disease, attention must be paid to differential diagnosis from influenza; in addition to the clinical symptoms of sneezing, coughing, and runny nose, influenza generally also involves fever and reduced feed intake. Toxigenic Pasteurella multocida: the age of onset is slightly later than that of Bordetella, generally at 4-12 weeks of age, with early symptoms mainly consisting of sneezing and nasal congestion. The most important clinical features are a shortened upper jaw, wrinkled skin on the nose, deviation of the snout, and tear stains. At the same time, there is relatively severe growth retardation, decreased feed conversion efficiency, and stunted growth.
The number of sneezes caused by this disease and the proportion of pigs with a shortened upper jaw in the whole herd can serve as reference indicators for the severity of the disease.
Prevention and control
There is a vaccine for this disease, but because it is endemic and a bacterial disease, medication is recommended for prevention and control.
The common sensitive drugs are sulfonamides and oxytetracycline.
Treatment
1. Sulfadimidine injection for nasal drip, 2mL per nostril;
2. Intramuscular injection of Yinhuang injection and ceftiofur sodium on one side, and lincomycin on the other side, once a day, for 3 consecutive days;
3. Add sulfadiazine (sulfachlorpyridazine sodium) 500g + TMP 100g + Yinhuang soluble powder 1Kg to the feed, for 7 consecutive days.
4. Use a strict ventilation system and reasonably control the temperature. Pay attention to improving the air quality inside the barn. At the same time, properly adjust the stocking density of the pigs and do a good job in immunization and prevention work for all vaccines.
