What to Do When a Clivia Gets a Stuck Flower Spike in Winter

1. Raise the Temperature

Winter temperatures are relatively low, and if a low-temperature environment is provided for a long time, a stuck flower spike is likely to occur. If the temperature is below 15°C, the flower scape struggles to grow. At this point, raise the temperature and keep the indoor environment at around 20°C, and this phenomenon will disappear.

2. Shade the Plant to Draw Out the Spike

The most commonly used method when a clivia has a stuck flower spike is to handle it by shading. This method is also very simple. Cover the unopened flower buds with aluminum foil; without light, development slows down and the spike grows, so it will recover before long and the stuck spike will disappear.

3. Move It to a Dark Place

Move the plant to a dark place with no light, and be sure to control the temperature, providing an environment between 18°C and 20°C. Then separate the leaves with string, and after three to five days the flower spike can be drawn out.

4. Tie the Leaves

A stuck flower spike is usually caused by the leaves. You can tie the leaves on both sides with string to leave enough space for the flower spike, then use a blade to cut a small slit in the leaf that is trapping the spike to make it easier to grow out, and the phenomenon will disappear before long.
