Can You Fertilize Kalanchoe While It Is Blooming?

Kalanchoe not only blooms beautifully, but its flowering period is also especially long. With good care, it can even bloom in all four seasons, which is quite rare in the plant world after flowering. However, kalanchoe produces a large amount of flowers and blooms for a long time, so its demand for nutrients is very high. Moreover, keeping up rapid growth during the growing season also consumes a considerable amount of nutrients.
Therefore, when fertilizing kalanchoe, you need to apply fertilizer frequently, because it is quite fond of fertilizer and needs to meet the nutrient demands of rapid growth and abundant blooming. But for many flowering plants, fertilizing during the blooming period is not allowed, otherwise it easily causes fertilizer burn.
Actually, since kalanchoe is an evergreen plant that stays green all year round, as long as the environment is suitable, especially if the temperature meets its requirements, it can generally be fertilized in all four seasons. This is because it consumes nutrients as it grows, and those nutrients must be replenished in time, otherwise it easily becomes thin and weak from nutrient deficiency, with poor growth, which in turn affects blooming.
So a kalanchoe that is currently blooming can also be fertilized. It is just that the root system of kalanchoe is generally not particularly well developed, because it is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant that, besides fleshy roots, also has a large number of fine capillary fibrous roots. If the fertilizer concentration is too high, it easily causes fertilizer burn and damages its root system. Therefore, when fertilizing kalanchoe, you must stick to light fertilizer applied frequently.
Moreover, because kalanchoe has very poor cold tolerance, or rather no cold tolerance at all, it generally needs a temperature above 15°C to grow and bloom. If the ambient temperature is lower than that, even if it is growing, it cannot be fertilized during the blooming period. Otherwise, it easily causes harm, affecting both growth and blooming. Therefore, when fertilizing kalanchoe, you need to make sure the ambient temperature is above 15°C.
Of course, if the ambient temperature is below 15°C, you also need to control watering in time, otherwise it easily reduces its cold resistance. And since it is not cold-tolerant to begin with, watering at low temperatures easily lowers the plant's cold resistance, while fertilizing at low temperatures easily causes fertilizer burn. Of course, kalanchoe usually does not bloom in temperatures below 15°C either. Therefore, although a kalanchoe that is currently blooming can also be fertilized, you must be careful to control the concentration and ensure the temperature is suitable, and it is generally only suitable to apply a phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as a top dressing to promote blooming.
