How to Propagate Orchids from Seed

I. Planting Methods

1. Prepare the seeds: Prepare a mature but unopened orchid fruit, wipe its surface with a disinfectant solution, and take out the seeds. Then place them in a 10% NaClO solution and soak for 5-10 minutes. After that, take them out and rinse the NaClO off the seed surfaces with water.

2. Prepare the potting soil: Because its seeds have a relatively low germination rate, you need to prepare higher-quality potting soil to plant them, which makes it easier for them to sprout. Specifically, use a soft potting soil that is slightly acidic, has a high humus content, and contains orchid fungi. If there is no orchid fungus, you can also use potting soil that has previously been used to grow orchids as a substitute.

3. Sowing and cultivation: Sow the seeds into the potting soil, then place it in a constant-temperature dark room at 25°C and cultivate slowly.

4. Germination and transplanting: After a period of time, their seeds will begin to germinate. At this point, you can move them to a sunny location to help them grow into protocorms. After that, transplant and cultivate them.

II. Orchid Seedling Care Methods

1. Keep moist: It likes a slightly moist growing environment. During care, water it promptly so that its growing medium always retains a small amount of moisture. If the weather is dry, you can mist it with water.

2. Fertilize appropriately: Fertilize it according to the fertility of the growing medium. Because orchid seedlings are very sensitive to flower fertilizer, they do not grow well with too much or too little fertilizer. In general, after it grows leaf buds, you can apply a light fertilizer once. In summer, reduce the amount of fertilizer. In autumn, you can apply slightly more.
