Goldfish plant (Nematanthus gregarius) growing too sparsely? Solutions

Friends familiar with the goldfish plant, an evergreen flowering plant, are usually drawn in by its extremely high ornamental value, but growing this plant well is not an easy task, especially when keeping it as a potted plant at home, which requires us to master certain skills. Otherwise, it will either grow poorly or be prone to various growing problems.
Indeed, some growers find that the goldfish plant they keep at home always grows weakly, and its branches and leaves look rather sparse, or even lean this way and that, which not only affects the potted plant's appearance but also, to a large extent, limits its flowering.
Everyone knows that to grow potted flowering plants well with good flowering results, we first need to provide them with a suitable growing environment. For a goldfish plant that grows weakly and sparsely like this, to change the situation we first need to check whether the care environment is suitable. And to provide a good growing environment, we must compare and make improvements based on its habit characteristics.
The goldfish plant prefers relatively fertile, loose, breathable and well-draining slightly acidic soil, so we first need to check whether the potting soil has become compacted and whether it has become salinized or alkalized. If it is confirmed that the potting soil is compacted and seriously salinized or alkalized, then it must be repotted with fresh soil in time.
Not only that, the goldfish plant also likes a warm, humid growing environment with good ventilation, so promptly check whether the care environment meets these standards. Moreover, this plant likes soft light and cannot tolerate strong light, so the light must be well controlled. And it likes warmth and fears high temperatures; when the ambient temperature is too high, it easily enters a semi-dormant state.
In addition, we also need to check the water and fertilizer management. The goldfish plant grows relatively quickly and has strong sprouting ability, and during the growing season it has a relatively large demand for water and nutrients, so water and fertilizer must be sufficient to meet its needs for rapid growth. But at the same time it cannot tolerate excess water or fertilizer, so water only when the soil is dry, watering thoroughly, and keep the fertilizer concentration low enough to avoid damaging the roots.
If we want the potted goldfish plant to grow vigorously and its sparse branches and leaves to become more luxuriant, then we also need to pay attention to pruning in normal times. Generally, during the peak growing season, pinch off the tips or top the plant once every 10-15 days, which both prevents the branches from growing leggy and better promotes the sprouting of new branches.
Timely pruning is an effective means of promoting sprouting and growth in the goldfish plant, but for it to maintain rapid growth, water and fertilizer must also keep up, so after pruning, fertilize it in time to replenish nutrients. During the growing season, likewise supplement it with some multi-nutrient fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium every 10-15 days, and to promote flowering, focus on applying phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as the flowering period approaches.
When the goldfish plant is given a suitable growing environment and proper care, it will inevitably grow vigorously. Especially when it is growing rather sparsely, it is often necessary to focus on pruning and fertilizer management, which allows it to sprout and grow more quickly, soon becoming lush with branches and leaves, with a more compact and attractive plant shape, and it will more easily burst into a full pot of blooms.
