How to make asparagus fern sprout from the roots

Potted asparagus fern (Asparagus plumosus) has an elegant, graceful and handsome form, with considerable ornamental value; it can be said to be a treasure in the eyes of writers and scholars past and present. If the asparagus fern sprouts from the roots and grows young plantlets, it can not only make the whole plant fuller, but also be divided to propagate more potted plants.

In fact, to achieve the goal of making asparagus fern sprout from the roots, usually you only need to manage light, watering and fertilizing well; of course, if you can appropriately supplement this with pruning methods, the effect will be even more obvious. So today, the editor will share with you the care and management techniques for making asparagus fern sprout from the roots.

1. Light

Asparagus fern prefers to grow in a cool, ventilated environment, so it is more suitable to place it indoors in a bright and well-ventilated spot. But to promote sprouting at the roots, it often needs a certain amount of light. And the length of light exposure is not better the longer it is; receiving 1-2 hours of soft light in the morning and evening each day is enough, and direct strong light especially needs to be avoided. As long as suitable light conditions can be met during the growing season, the necessary conditions for prompting its roots to sprout are often created.

2. Watering

Asparagus fern should usually be watered in moderation, not too much, otherwise it easily causes root rot; and the amount of water each time often needs to be decided according to the dry-wet state of the potting soil and the growth condition of the asparagus fern. Generally, after 3-5 light waterings, give 1 thorough watering. Especially in summer, on the one hand, asparagus fern grows quite vigorously in summer and consumes a lot of water; on the other hand, summer temperatures are also relatively high, so besides absorbing more water, the amount of water evaporation is also relatively large, so watering should be appropriately increased to ensure there is enough water to maintain the normal growth of the asparagus fern.

3. Fertilizing

Although asparagus fern does not particularly like fertilizer, nor does it depend on it to a large extent, it is often limited by the size of the flowerpot and the amount of soil in the pot; as nutrients are continuously consumed, there may also be a situation where its growth needs cannot be met. Especially when it needs to be prompted to sprout new shoots from the roots, reasonable topdressing can often promote sprouting to a large extent.

But fertilizing asparagus fern should adhere to the principle of light fertilizer applied frequently, and especially the concentration needs to be controlled well. Because if the concentration is too high and the fertilizer strength is too strong, it may cause the branches and leaves of the asparagus fern to turn yellow and wither, mainly because the strong fertilizer effect burns the roots. To avoid this phenomenon, on the one hand the concentration must be controlled well, and on the other hand a suitable nutrient material also needs to be chosen. Usually during the growing season, apply some dilute decomposed cake fertilizer water, hoof piece solution and other organic liquid fertilizers.

For young plants, topdressing can be kept to once every 15-20 days, while for perennial asparagus fern, it can be kept to once every 10-15 days. But at the same time, it is also suggested to apply alum fertilizer water once a month instead of topdressing, as this can well improve the acidity and alkalinity of the potting soil and also better promote the growth and development of the plant.

By combining loosening the soil of the potted asparagus fern, taking in a small amount of compound fertilizer and mineral additives at the right time and in the right amount; at the same time moving it outdoors on clear mornings to provide 1-2 hours of light, and watering scientifically and reasonably, the asparagus fern can often quickly sprout new buds from the roots and grow new stems. It can be seen that what kind of asparagus fern you want to grow is often closely related to whether we take targeted and relevant care measures.
