Camellia Drill Grafting Method

The best time for drill grafting camellias is June to July each year, when the survival rate of grafts can reach over 90%. For the scion, choose healthy one-year-old branches and only graft after they have been properly prepared. For the rootstock, choose a thick, several-year-old tea plant and drill a suitable hole according to the size of the scion. After inserting the scion, make sure the two fit tightly together.

Drill Grafting Method for Camellias

1. Grafting Time

The drill grafting time for camellia trees can be chosen from May to September each year, with June to July being the most suitable, when the weather is relatively warm and most ideal for grafting camellias. After successful grafting, the survival rate will be relatively high, reaching over 90%, and the plant can adapt to the new environment more easily and grow and sprout quickly.

2. Scion Selection

The branch used for grafting must be a vigorous, healthy one-year-old branch, as only such branches are relatively suitable for grafting. After cutting the branch, first remove the bark from the bottom to increase the contact area with the rootstock, sharpen it, treat it with a dedicated disinfectant, and let it dry in a ventilated place before starting the grafting.

3. Grafting Method

Generally, a thick, several-year-old tea plant is chosen as the rootstock, then its upper part is trimmed flat, and a hole of suitable size is drilled according to the size of the scion. Then insert the scion, making sure the scion and rootstock fit tightly together, and finally wrap and secure the two together with grafting film. After about 2 months, it will survive and grow.
