How to make gardenias thrive with a full pot and lots of flower buds

1. Plenty of light

When growing gardenias in pots at home, you must make sure they get plenty of light, as this allows them to build up nutrients for growth and makes it possible for them to fill out the pot. If you have a courtyard or a rooftop, you can move the potted gardenia outside so it gets full sun. If you keep it indoors, you can put it on a balcony or in a spot indoors with bright sunlight, so it receives plenty of light and can then grow into a full, thriving plant.

2. Suitable soil

Soil is the basic condition that promotes growth. Gardenias struggle to grow in alkaline soil, and it is even harder for them to fill out the pot in such conditions. During growth and care, you need to provide suitable acidic soil; the soil should be loose, fertile and well-draining. You can buy this kind of soil directly, or mix garden soil and leaf mold at home to make your own potting soil.

3. Proper watering

Gardenias like water and prefer to grow in a moist environment. Once you notice the potting soil has dried out, water promptly, but be careful not to give too much water each time. The water should be on the acidic side; let tap water sit first, add a few drops of an acidic substance, and then use it for watering.

4. Timely fertilizing

During the growth and flowering period, fertilize once every half month. Fertilizer must not be lacking, but do not apply too much either. Keep fertilization balanced and do not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer.
