Is a deep pot or a shallow pot better for osmanthus

Many gardening friends like to grow osmanthus in pots, because osmanthus is not only one of China's ten traditional famous flowers, but also blooms with a rather fragrant scent, and when grown in a pot it also has high ornamental value. But if we grow osmanthus in pots, we must first provide the hardware guarantee for it, that is, the material basis it needs for growth, including potting soil and flower pots.

In previous articles, the editor shared with you what kind of soil and flower pots are suitable for potted osmanthus. But for potted flowers and plants, planting depth also has an important effect on their growth. However, if planted deep, a deep pot is often needed; if planted shallow, a shallow pot is usually used.

As for whether a deep pot or a shallow pot is better, it depends not only on the size of the plant, but also on how well developed its root system is. Usually, the root system of osmanthus is relatively well developed, but because the plant size varies, the flower pot we choose must also match it. Generally, either a deep pot or a shallow pot can often be used to grow osmanthus.

For larger osmanthus plants, the root system is relatively well developed, so a deep pot is generally used for deep planting; for smaller osmanthus plants, because the root system is often not especially well developed, we can consider using a shallow pot for planting. But whether a deep pot or a shallow pot is used, in principle the root system must be able to spread freely inside the pot and not be restricted by the amount of space.

Not only that, for large osmanthus trees, using a deep pot for deep planting not only gives the roots more space to spread out, but also allows them to obtain more nutrients from the pot to promote growth, avoiding the effect on root distribution and absorption capacity caused by planting a large seedling in a small pot; for small osmanthus trees, using a shallow pot is often more reasonable, as it is not only better for root aeration and growth, but the water in the pot also dries out more easily, avoiding the situation where a small plant uses a large pot, making the water in the pot hard to use up and causing waterlogging and root rot.

Of course, in terms of the size and depth of the flower pot, we need to choose according to the size of the plant, but whether the texture of the flower pot is good will also greatly affect the growth of the plant. Generally we choose a clay pot with better permeability for planting, so that when overwatering occurs, the excess water can be ensured to seep down and drain away, and at the same time the roots can exchange air better, avoiding suffocation.

Therefore, we cannot simply think that a deep pot or a shallow pot is better when growing osmanthus in pots, but should consider the pot according to the size of the plant. When choosing a pot, the size, depth and permeability must all be suitable, so as to ensure that the plant will not have its normal growth affected by an improperly chosen flower pot or improper deep or shallow planting.
