How to handle daffodils after they finish blooming

After the blooming period of daffodils ends, you can handle them by taking out the bulbs to grow them on, letting the plants naturally lose their growth vigor, cutting off water to induce dormancy, or continuing to care for them. In fact, after the daffodil blooming period generally ends, with good care, they can still bloom again the following year.

1. Take out the bulbs to grow them on

Daffodils generally do not have the ability to bloom only once. After daffodils finish blooming in the first year, take them out of the growing environment, clean and disinfect the bulbs, wrap them in clean newspaper and refrigerate them, then replant and revive them after early spring of the following year.

2. Let them die off naturally

Daffodils draw nutrients from the bulb to bloom. After blooming, the nutrients in the bulb are greatly depleted, the bulb becomes soft, and it will gradually wither and die. If you do not want to keep them, you can simply discard them.

3. Cut off water to induce dormancy

Besides taking out the daffodil bulbs, you can also leave the bulbs in place and care for them by cutting off water to induce dormancy. As summer approaches, the leaves will turn yellow; cut off the yellow leaves while stopping watering, maintain appropriate humidity in a cool, shaded environment, and resume watering to revive them after October.

4. Continue growing them

Prune away the faded flowers remaining after the daffodils finish blooming to reduce nutrient consumption. Apply fertilizer once every 7 days to let new bulbs grow and replace the old bulbs. After June to July, take the bulbs out of the pot and prune them; after growing them for 2 years, they can send up stems and bloom again.
