What fertilizer should be applied to dragon fruit during the fruit-setting stage

During the fruiting period of dragon fruit, especially the fruit-swelling stage, fertilizer and water management must be strengthened. This is because the growth and development of the fruit consumes a considerable amount of nutrients, but the fertilizer chosen at this time must be targeted, with the goal of improving the fruit-setting rate, promoting fruit swelling, and improving fruit quality.

Potted dragon fruit differs from field-planted dragon fruit. When grown in pots, nutrients are often very limited due to space constraints, so fertilizing must not only be timely but also frequent. As long as we control the concentration well, fertilizer burn that causes fruit drop usually will not occur.

Fertilizing dragon fruit during the fruiting stage differs from the growing stage. The growing stage mainly supplements nitrogen, while the fruiting stage mainly supplements phosphorus and potassium. Therefore, to stabilize and preserve the fruit and promote fruit growth and development, it is recommended to apply some decomposed organic fertilizer and high-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer during the fruit-setting stage.

Generally, a small potted dragon fruit plant can be top-dressed with at least half a jin of decomposed organic fertilizer liquid; a large potted dragon fruit plant can be top-dressed with 10 jin of decomposed organic fertilizer liquid. At the same time, add about 200 grams of high-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer to the organic fertilizer liquid, mix thoroughly, and then pour it onto the potted dragon fruit.

But the watering method must also be correct. Do not pour it directly at the roots. Usually, water it evenly in a circle along the inner edge of the flower pot, with the frequency controlled at once every 10-15 days. Generally, during the fruit-setting period, only 2-3 top-dressings are needed to meet the nutrient needs of fruit growth and development.

Of course, during the fruiting period of dragon fruit, we usually focus on top-dressing with organic fertilizer, while appropriately supplementing phosphorus and potassium fertilizers such as superphosphate and potassium sulfate, which can also promote sugar accumulation in the fruit and improve fruit quality.

At the same time, we also need to do a good job of moisture retention for potted plants. We can appropriately spray water on the stems and leaves of the dragon fruit, which can help retain moisture on the branches and also promote the plant to grow aerial roots. This is because dragon fruit prefers a sunny, warm and humid growing environment, but requires good ventilation conditions.
