How to Grow Lilies in Winter

The care temperature for lilies must not fall below zero degrees. If you are in a northern region, it is best to move them indoors for care, and pay attention to keeping them warm at night. In southern regions, you only need to cover them with a layer of plastic film and let them get plenty of sun. Lilies also need a certain period of low temperatures before blooming, and the specific duration depends on the variety.

Lily Winter Cultivation Methods

1. Moving Indoors for Care

The care temperature for lilies in winter must not fall below zero degrees Celsius. In northern regions, when the temperature drops below zero degrees Celsius, they should be moved indoors for care. The indoor temperature should ideally be around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures will cause the plants to enter dormancy or even die. Pay special attention to the day-night temperature difference and keep them warm at night.

2. Cold Treatment

When caring for the plants indoors, do not place them near heating vents or air conditioning vents. These places are relatively dry and not conducive to plant growth. Lilies must go through a 45-to-100-day cold period before blooming to make the flowers more vivid in color. The specific duration of cold treatment depends on the different varieties of lilies.

3. Proper Watering

Lilies do not like overly moist environments, especially when winter temperatures are relatively low. At this time, the plants grow slowly and have relatively low water needs. Overwatering makes it difficult for the roots to absorb water, leading to waterlogging and rot. When watering, simply keep the soil slightly moist. You can spray water on the soil surface or mist the plants.

4. Overwintering in the South

Winter temperatures in southern China are usually above zero degrees, so lilies can be grown outdoors without being moved indoors. However, certain insulation measures are needed. You can cover ground-planted lilies with a layer of plastic film. On nice days, open the film to let them breathe and get plenty of sun. When the temperature rises slightly, you can remove the film.
