Pothos propagation methods and precautions, water propagation or soil cutting

Pothos can be propagated using the water method or by soil cutting. It is recommended to propagate from April to August, choosing a sunny, well-ventilated morning for the operation. Note that the water used for water propagation must be clean and clear, and after propagation pay attention to moisture retention and ventilation in the care routine.

1. Water propagation

The water method is the most commonly used means of propagating pothos. Select a 15-30 cm stem from a healthy mother plant and cut off the leaves on the end that goes into the water. Choose a vase with a slender body, clean and disinfect the pothos, then insert it. The water level should reach two-thirds of the vase depth, and with normal care it will take root and sprout in about one month.

2. Soil propagation

Soil propagation of pothos basically uses the cutting method. Cut off a thick, sturdy stem node with a knife, wash and disinfect it, let it air-dry, and apply rooting powder or carbendazim to the cut end before preparing to insert it. The soil medium can be loose, breathable plain sand or sandy loam. For pothos successfully propagated by soil cutting, spray water daily to keep it moist.

3. Propagation time

Pothos cannot be propagated at just any time; generally, choose the period from April to August each year. The temperature during these 5 months is relatively warm, and rainfall is abundant with sufficient humidity, which can promote the growth of pothos and increase the success rate of propagation. It is best to propagate on a sunny, warm morning within the day, avoiding operation under the hot conditions at noon.

4. Precautions

If tap water is to be used when propagating pothos in water, it should first be left standing for 1-2 days to let the chlorine evaporate before use. No matter which propagation method is used, keeping pothos moist is very important, and ventilation must be done well to prevent pests and diseases. That is all for the pothos propagation methods and precautions; we wish you success in propagating pothos plants.
