What to Do When Daffodil Flowers Fade

When daffodil flowers fade, the spent blooms need to be pruned promptly to avoid consuming too many nutrients and to prevent pest and disease attacks. After all the daffodil flowers have faded, you can clean up the remaining bulbs, disinfect them in a dedicated disinfectant, let the outer skin dry, and then store them. You can choose low-temperature storage or bury them in soil for storage.

How to Handle Daffodils After They Finish Blooming

1. Prune Stems and Leaves

When daffodil flowers fade, the spent blooms need to be pruned promptly. Faded flowers should not remain on the plant, as this consumes excess nutrients and makes the plant vulnerable to pest and disease attacks, which is detrimental to the remaining daffodil blooms. Use sterilized sharp scissors when pruning.

2. Handle the Bulbs

After all the daffodil flowers have faded, if you want them to bloom again the following year, you can actually clean the bulbs and keep them for replanting later. Take the daffodil bulbs out of the growing medium, trim off the rotten and residual roots from the surface, disinfect them in a dedicated disinfectant, and then let the outer skin dry before storing.

3. Storage Methods

Daffodil bulbs can be stored in a low-temperature environment or buried in soil. Bury the prepared daffodil bulbs in loose, breathable soil, then keep the soil slightly moist and provide dormant-period care. Once the temperature is suitable the following year, dig the bulbs out and continue planting.
