Differential Diagnosis and Prevention and Control Measures for Sow Reproductive Disorders (2)
3 Differential diagnosis by histopathology

Stillbirth and placental changes: porcine Japanese encephalitis causes fetal hydrocephalus and subcutaneous edema; toxoplasmosis and swine fever produce malformed fetuses; brucellosis causes fetal ascites, subcutaneous edema and purulent placenta; in porcine leptospirosis and brucellosis, stillbirths rarely become mummified; in swine fever, necropsy shows button ulcers at the ileocecal junction and hemorrhagic infarction at the spleen margin; porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) shows varying degrees of pulmonary congestion and edema, with the lung tissue presenting diffuse brown lesions.

  4 Prevention and ControlMeasures

There are currently no goodtreatmentdrugs for swine reproductive disorders; prevention mainly relies on vaccination. Prevention of porcine parvovirus: first-litter sows and growing boars are vaccinated 1 to 2 months before mating. Prevention of Japanese encephalitis: gilts are injected with attenuated or inactivated vaccine at 5 to 6 months of age, twice a year, while other pigs should be injected with inactivated vaccine one month before the epidemic season arrives. Prevention of porcine pseudorabies: sows are vaccinated about 1 month before mating and before farrowing. Prevention of swine fever:breeding pigsare vaccinated once every six months, and piglets are immunized twice at around 20 and 60 days of age; in areas where swine fever is prevalent, super-early immunization is used. Prevention of brucellosis: quarantine and monitoring are carried out at least once a year, and once detected, animals are culled immediately.

For porcine leptospirosis, treatment: when diseased pigs are found, streptomycin or gentamicin can be injected intramuscularly and the pigs isolated fortreatment, with oxytetracycline added to the feed, about 1 gram per kilogram of feed. Prevention andcontroltreatment of porcine toxoplasmosis: cats are prohibited from being kept on pig farms; mixing sulfamonomethoxine into the feed for 3 to 5 days can prevent the disease, and sulfonamide drugs can also be injected intramuscularly fortreatment。
