How to Grow Scallions? Detailed Planting Methods and Timing
I. Planting Time
Scallions are fairly cold-tolerant and are generally sown in March-April and harvested in June-July, or sown in September-October and harvested in April-May of the following year. In southern regions, they can be planted in both autumn and winter.
II. Planting Methods
1. Soil: It prefers soft, nutrient-rich soil with strong drainage and aeration, and is not suited to sandy soil.
2. Light: It prefers gentle, diffused light. If the light is too intense, it needs to be shaded, otherwise the leaves may turn yellow, the fibers may increase, and the taste may worsen.
3. Temperature: It prefers a relatively cool climate and is highly cold-tolerant. During germination, 13°C-20°C is most suitable; during stem and leaf growth, 10°C-23°C is optimal. When the temperature exceeds 28°C, its growth rate drops noticeably.
4. Watering: Its root system is relatively sparse, so it needs less water than Welsh onions, but it is not drought-tolerant, so the soil should be kept moist.
5. Fertilizing: Spring and summer are its growing seasons, so 1-2 topdressings can be applied as appropriate. The first topdressing can be given at 20-25 days, and the second at 12-15 days.
