Why does a pig suddenly become unable to stand? Find the cause before treating

When a pig suddenly can't stand up, find the cause before treating it!

During the breeding and production process, whenever people come across a pig that can't stand up, they suspect streptococcus. Actually, it's fine to consider this first, but further investigation is still needed.

There are many causes of a pig being unable to stand. It could be encephalitis, it could be the spine, it could be arthritis, it could be a problem with the pig's hooves, it could be an incorrect calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the feed, it could be diarrhea. If you don't figure it out clearly and just use medication directly, it's very easy to make mistakes and delaypig diseasetreatment. Today I'll explain to everyone the specific situations of pigs being unable to stand:

I. Unable to stand

1. This situation is caused by diseases that trigger encephalitis, such as Japanese encephalitis, pseudorabies, encephalitis-type streptococcus, swine paratyphoid, and Haemophilus parasuis. If a sow is infected with Japanese encephalitis or pseudorabies, it mostly occurs in nursing pigs. The sick pig lies on its side, has notreatmentvalue, and can only be prevented through vaccination to avoid the occurrence of this disease.

Encephalitis-type streptococcus, paratyphoid, Haemophilus parasuis, and edema are bacterial diseases and will have typical neurological symptoms. Mannitol can be used to reduce intracranial pressure. In the early stage, use cephalosporins plus sulfonamides;treatmentresults are relatively good. Sulfonamides can pass through the blood-brain barrier.

2. Spinal problems, hind limb paralysis, weak hind legs, with only the front legs dragging the body forward, and when forcibly helped up, it sits back down as soon as you let go - this is a spinal problem. If it cannot stand steadily as soon as you let go, it is hind limb paralysis caused by swine fever, and it can be addressed through swine fevertreatment。

Streptococcus, Haemophilus parasuis, swine erysipelas, and foot-and-mouth disease cause pigs to feel pain when standing, so the pigs dare not stand.

1. Arthritis caused by streptococcus and Haemophilus parasuis, with swelling and heat at the affected area, can be judged by puncture. Under normal circumstances, pus indicates streptococcus, and yellow watery fluid indicates Haemophilus parasuis. Streptococcus and erysipelas are sensitive to antibiotics, and medication works quickly. Haemophilus parasuistreatmentresults are relatively poor, because it is sporadic and there are many serotypes, so cephalosporins plus quinolones can be usedtreatment。

2. Foot-and-mouth disease, and cracked hooves in sows, will cause injury to a single hoof of the pig. Penicillin can be injectedtreatment, and furnace ash or plant ash should be spread on the ground to prevent the ground from being slippery. After a few days it will recover.

3. Slight injury to the lumbar spine, abdominal pain, and when forcibly pulled up it can walk a couple of steps. Penicillin and flunixin meglumine should be injected, and exercise should be driven. Without exercise, it may lead to paralysis. If a pig lies on the ground with its four limbs tucked under its body, it may be a disease of the pig's digestive system, and it can be treated according to gastrointestinal diseasetreatment.

III. Wants to stand but cannot stand up

If forcibly pulled up, the pig can stand, but its four limbs tremble. This is caused by an imbalance in the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, and calcium and phosphorus need to be supplemented, along with vitamins.
