Spring coughing and wheezing in pigs: causes and treatment methods every pig farmer must know

March is coming, and with it spring. Everything is a fresh start, and may the COVID-19 pandemic end soon.

The transition from winter to spring is here, and it is the high-incidence season for coughing and wheezing in pigs!

Dark, damp and cold pens, crowded pig herds, sudden feed changes and other stressors, or large day-night temperature differences, all easily trigger this disease. The poorer the raising conditions on a pig farm, the greater the harm caused by this disease.

Simple enzootic pneumonia

Simple enzootic pneumonia does not have a high mortality rate. It shows as coughing, difficulty breathing, reduced feed intake, stunted growth turning pigs into runts, and reduced weight gain, delaying the age at which pigs reach market weight by 7-10 days; it also increases the feed-to-meat ratio and reduces the uniformity of the herd. According to estimates, it causes an average economic loss of about 60-70 yuan per market hog, mainly affecting the farm's economic returns.

We suggest adding tiamulin and doxycycline to the feed to prevent andtreat。

Whether the pig farm is dealing with a mixed infection

When determining whether respiratory disease on a pig farm is a mixed infection, the main thing to look at is the severity of the onset. If there is severe difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, refusal to eat, reddening of the whole body, and even death, it is generally a mixed infection caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, PRRS virus, porcine circovirus type II and others. If it cannot be treated in timetreated, it often causes huge losses.

It is suggested to add Banqing granules and flunixin meglumine to the drinking water, and add tiamulin to the feed together with doxycycline.

How to handle mixed viral infections

For mixed respiratory infections caused by PRRS or influenza, you need to see which disease is more severe, such as obvious symptoms of Streptococcus or Haemophilus parasuis.

It is suggested to use Banqing granules together with carbasalate calcium in the drinking water. The dosage can simply follow the recommendations on the label; if the enzootic pneumonia symptoms are obvious and the mixed infection includes contagious pleuropneumonia, consider using tiamulin together with florfenicol. If fever is present, use carbasalate calcium.
