The differences between Yucca elephantipes and Dracaena, and which one is easier to grow

I. Differences between the two

1. Different family and genus: Taxonomically, the two differ greatly. Yucca elephantipes is a perennial woody plant in the family Liliaceae, genus Yucca, while Dracaena is a tree in the family Agavaceae, genus Dracaena. The difference in family and genus means they are relatively distant relatives, though according to past classifications, Agavaceae was also considered a type of Liliaceae.

2. Different appearance: Yucca elephantipes and Dracaena look very similar at first glance, but if you look carefully at the leaves, you can still tell them apart. The former has narrower leaves, lanceolate in shape, usually growing at the top of the stem, leathery in texture, very tough, but with no leaf stalk. The latter's leaves are not as long, sword-shaped, and usually rather sharp.

3. Different habits: Yucca elephantipes comes from Central America, and is generally found in the warm regions of Mexico and Guatemala. It is relatively tolerant of drought and poor soil, likes a warm climate and an environment with ample light, and must be kept above 0°C to overwinter. Dracaena is native to the Canary Islands, grows all year round, and cannot go below 5°C in winter.

II. Which one is easier to grow

Both plants come from tropical regions, and tend to grow relatively easily in southern China, but because winters in the north are relatively cold, to ensure they survive the winter safely, you must do a good job of keeping them warm; usually it is better to grow them in a greenhouse. In addition, since both grow relatively tall, when kept at home you must prune them frequently.
