What to Do If a Pig Is Poisoned? Learn to Identify the Symptoms and Give Correct First Aid

Livestock Farming 0 views
How to give first aid for pig poisoning? What to do when a pig is poisoned? Which situations mean a pig has been poisoned?
During pig farming, you often encounter situations where a pig suddenly dies, foams at the mouth, or breathes rapidly. Pig poisoning commonly presents this way. Next, let's analyze the symptoms of pig poisoning and first aid methods Clinical symptoms: Acute poisoning mostly occurs suddenly, shortly after feeding, while chronic poisoning shows similar chronic symptoms, such as blindness and anemia. Affected pigs show rapid breathing and grunting and panting, as in black spot sweet potato poisoning and hydrocyanic acid poisoning. Affected pigs often open the mouth and stick out the tongue, foam at the mouth, and drool. The visible mucous membranes of affected pigs become cyanotic, like the color of eggplant flowers or chinaberry flowers. After poisoning, pigs often have muscle tremors or paralysis. Affected pigs often show abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, or diarrhea or constipation. Some affected pigs vomit, some poisoned pigs may have visual disturbances such as dilated pupils, and some poisoned pigs may show neurological symptoms; these often present as excitement or depression, screaming wildly, or staring straight ahead.
First aid measures: 1. Bloodletting If poisoning has lasted a long time and the toxic substance has already entered the blood in large amounts, while using antidotes, venesection can be used to save the pig, with each bloodletting volume of 300-400 milliliters. In addition, measures such as fluid infusion and giving plenty of drinking water to promote urination and sweating can also alleviate poisoning symptoms. 2. Emetic induction Generally used for poisoning by pesticides such as organophosphates. Subcutaneous injection of the emetic veratrine 0.01-0.03 grams, or oral administration of antimony potassium tartrate 1-2 grams. If no emetic is available, a wooden stick or rubber tube can also be used to lightly touch the throat mucosa of the affected pig to induce vomiting. 3. Gastric lavage If the toxic substance has already entered the pig's body for 4-6 hours, gastric lavage should be performed. For hydrocyanic acid poisoning, a 1% potassium permanganate solution or 3% hydrogen peroxide can be used; for organophosphate pesticide poisoning, a 1%-5% sodium bicarbonate solution can be used; for zinc phosphide poisoning, a 1% copper sulfate solution can be used. Gastric lavage should be repeated until the washed-out water becomes clear. Gastric lavage is not suitable for poisoning by corrosive drugs, to avoid causing gastric perforation. 4. Use antidotes If the toxic substance has entered the blood, the above detoxification methods are all difficult to make effective, and antidotes must be used. For nitrite poisoning, a 1% methylene blue solution can be used, 1 milliliter per kilogram of body weight, by intramuscular or intravenous injection; for hydrocyanic acid poisoning, a 1% sodium nitrite solution can be used, injected intravenously at 1 milliliter per kilogram of body weight; for organophosphate pesticide poisoning, atropine or pralidoxime can be injected; for alkaline substance poisoning, dilute hydrochloric acid or vinegar can be used for neutralization and detoxification; for alkaloid poisoning, a 0.2% potassium permanganate solution can be used for detoxification. 5. Give purgatives If the toxic substance has already entered the intestinal tract, purgatives should be given. Generally, saline purgatives should be chosen, and commonly used saline purgatives include magnesium sulfate and so on. When pigs suffer from salt poisoning, saline purgatives must not be chosen, and a large amount of clean water should be administered orally. Regarding the symptoms and first aid methods of pig poisoning, many farmers think it is nothing to feed pigs moldy feed or corn and so on, but in fact the harm is very great. Mycotoxin poisoning can cause acute death in pigs, and friends who raise pigs must pay attention. If you have other questions about pig farming, you can also follow me and send me a private message.
