How to plant Clivia seeds? A detailed guide to the planting method

Soak the seeds in water at about 40°C for about 30 hours, then remove and let cool. The treated seeds produce radicles in about 17-20 days. Choose fine sand, wash and disinfect it, spread it evenly in a container, place the seeds with the germinating eye facing down, spacing them about four cm apart on the sand surface, then cover with another layer of fine sand, not too thick, a thin layer is enough; it takes about one month for the cotyledons to grow.
1. Collecting the seeds
Generally, sowing the seeds one to two days after they are removed is best; at this time the seeds contain more moisture and have strong vitality, and leaving them for too long will affect the germination rate. Use scissors to cut off the fruit together with the "flower stalk", then peel out the seeds. If sowing is delayed, hang the seeds together with the "flower stalk" in a cool, ventilated place; they can be stored for about one month, but the germination rate will decrease.
2. Planting time
There is no seasonal restriction on when to plant Clivia; the specific sowing time is determined by when the seeds mature.
3. Sowing method
1. To fully soften the endosperm and seed coat, before planting the selected good seeds, first soak them in water at about 40°C for about 30 hours, then remove and let cool. The treated seeds produce radicles in about 17-20 days.
2. Choose a breathable container that drains easily; a wooden box is recommended. For initial planting you can choose sawdust or river sand; here we explain the river sand method in detail. Choose fine sand, wash and disinfect it, spread it evenly in the container, place the seeds with the germinating eye facing down and spacing them about four cm apart on the sand surface, then cover with another layer of fine sand, not too thick, a thin layer is enough.
3. Using river sand provides large gaps and strong water permeability; if the surface of the pot is found to be dry, spray or water it. Do not water too much; a humidity of 40 percent is enough, and keep the temperature between 18°C and 25°C.
Once the climatic conditions are set up well, it takes about one month for the cotyledons to grow.
4. Management after the seeds sprout
After the seeds grow into seedlings, they must be divided into separate pots; choose a flower pot with good breathability, lay about 5 cm of soil at the bottom, place the seedlings on it, and in the early stage it is best to water by spraying, which can both increase humidity and prevent too strong a water flow from washing away the seeds and seedlings. Place them in a semi-shaded place to recover for a few days.
