What to Do When Orchid Leaf Tips Turn Black? Causes and Solutions

What to do when orchid leaf tips turn black?

When orchid leaf tips turn black, treat them according to the cause: for sunburn from strong light, provide shade and sun protection; for dry air, mist with water to supplement moisture and raise humidity; for overwatering, reduce watering and water once every 3-5 days; for low-temperature freeze damage, keep the temperature between 15-25°C; for improper fertilizing, dilute the fertilizer solution and apply light, frequent feeds so it can grow normally.

1. Shade and sun protection

After an orchid is exposed to direct strong light, its leaf tips may become sunburned and black. Promptly move the orchid to a cool, ventilated spot for care so it can slowly recover its health, then give it bright, indirect light to avoid blackening again from lack of light.

2. Mist to supplement moisture. This happens only when the air is too dry. Use a spray bottle to mist the air from time to time to increase air humidity, so the orchid's leaf tips no longer turn black from insufficient humidity.

3. Control watering

Overwatering can also cause orchid roots to rot, leading to blackened leaf tips. Drain the excess water from the potting soil, keep the soil at a suitable moisture level, and water once every 3-5 days, so the orchid can absorb water normally and grow.

4. Increase temperature and protect from cold. In winter, when the temperature is too low, orchids that lack good cold tolerance may suffer freeze damage and develop blackened leaf tips. Place them indoors to increase the temperature, keeping the room temperature at around 15-25°C, to avoid poor growth from cold damage.

5. Fertilize properly

During the orchid's growth, applying too much or too concentrated fertilizer can also cause root burn, and the leaf tips begin to turn black. Water to dilute the fertilizer solution, treat the roots, and then supplement nutrients reasonably with light, frequent fertilizer applications.
