Why orchids have no fragrance, and four methods to make orchids fill the air with delicate fragrance

Orchids, together with plum blossoms, bamboo and chrysanthemums, are known as the four gentlemen among flowers, and since ancient times they have been crowned with the title of noble and elegant. So there has never been a shortage of people who like them, and as living standards gradually rise today, more and more people place a pot of orchids in their homes to show refinement. We all know that flowers more or less have some fragrance, but why do some flower lovers find their orchids have no fragrance?

I. The 4 reasons orchids have no fragrance

I believe flower lovers who have grown orchids all know that the flowers orchids produce also have a faint fragrance. Although it is not as strong as the scent of some flowers, if you lean in and smell carefully, you can still detect a fresh floral fragrance. In ancient times there was even a line describing the fragrance of orchid flowers: when you deliberately try to smell it, it refuses to be fragrant; the fragrance lies where the mind is not set on it. This also shows that orchid flowers do have fragrance, so why do some flower lovers find their orchids have no fragrance?

1. Variety issue

If you have carefully tended your orchids exactly according to orchid growing methods and they still have no fragrance, then the problem very likely lies with the orchid variety. For example, some Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchids) produced in parts of Hubei and Henan have no fragrance, and Yunnan's Douban orchids also have no fragrance, so flower lovers should ask clearly when buying orchids.

2. Insufficient light

Surely many people learn roughly about orchids' growing habits before growing them, so they know that orchids are plants that prefer partial shade. But preferring partial shade does not mean they do not need sunlight; all plants need sunlight for normal growth. So when growing orchids we should also let them receive appropriate sunlight, so that the flowers they produce will not lack fragrance.

3. Too little fertilizer

When growing orchids we know that orchids do not have high fertilizer requirements, so people often neglect fertilizing orchids. In fact, even if the demand is not high, fertilizer is still needed, only not in large amounts. A lack of fertilizer in orchids can cause yellowing leaves and dropped flowers and buds, which is very harmful to their growth, so the nectary naturally cannot produce fragrant nectar.

4. Temperature too low

For several orchid varieties whose blooming period is in early spring and late winter, they should originally have a faint fresh fragrance. But often because the temperature is too low, the nectar of the nectary is frozen by the cold air, so the fragrance cannot be smelled. Therefore in winter we should move orchids to a slightly warmer place, and then naturally the floral fragrance can be smelled.

II. Orchid varieties that bloom with fragrance and those without

In this vast world, everyone's preferences differ. Some people simply love floral fragrance, while others, because they personally dislike floral fragrance or are allergic to it, choose plant varieties that are not fragrant to begin with. So which orchid varieties are fragrant and which are not?

Generally speaking, Chinese orchids (Cymbidium goeringii, Cymbidium faberi, Cymbidium ensifolium, Cymbidium kanran, Cymbidium sinense, Cymbidium tortisepalum, and Cymbidium lianpan) all carry waves of delicate fragrance. However, among Chinese orchids, Douban orchids have no fragrance, and Western orchids (Cattleya, bee orchids, Phalaenopsis, large-flowered Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Paphiopedilum, etc.) basically have no fragrance when they bloom.

So when choosing orchids, we flower lovers can decide whether to buy fragrant or non-fragrant orchids according to our own preferences. If you like fragrant orchids, you can choose Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid) among Chinese orchids, because among fragrant varieties Cymbidium goeringii has the most pleasant scent. If you do not like floral fragrance, you can buy Western orchids.

III. Orchids are non-toxic but should not be placed in the bedroom

We often hear claims that orchids are toxic, which makes some flower lovers who grow orchids very anxious. So are orchids really toxic? In fact there is no such claim; orchids are not only non-toxic, their fragrance is also very beneficial to the human respiratory tract. Orchids can also be used to make tea, and orchid tea tastes very mellow and fragrant.

However, although orchids are non-toxic, some orchid varieties have a relatively strong fragrance, and over time it can easily cause insomnia and excitement symptoms. Moreover, at night plants have no light for photosynthesis, so they compete with people for oxygen. Therefore it is best not to put orchids in the bedroom.
