Why Are Orchid Leaf Tips Turning Black? An Analysis of Common Causes

There can be many possible causes of black tips on orchids. If it is due to too much light, move it to a spot with partial shade, or provide shade in summer and let it receive light only in the morning and evening; if it is due to dry air, sprinkle water around it or mist the leaves, but do not let water droplets get into the leaf sheaths; if it is due to temperatures that are too low, move it to a warm place; if it is due to waterlogged roots that have rotted, take it out of the pot, cut off the rotten roots and disinfect them, then replant it.
1. Too Much Light
Cause: Orchids are very sensitive to direct sunlight, and too much light can easily scorch their leaves, causing the leaf tips to turn black.
Solution: Move the orchid to a spot with partial shade, or provide shade in summer. Note that long-term lack of light is also bad for its growth and affects flower bud differentiation. So it can receive light in the morning and evening each day, and the pot should also be rotated regularly to ensure all sides get light.
2. Dry Air
Cause: Orchids grow best in a humid environment. If the climate is too dry and the temperature is also very high, the leaves can easily lose water and develop black tips.
Solution: Place the orchid in a cool spot. At the same time, sprinkle water around it to raise the humidity of the environment; the evaporating water can also lower the temperature. You can also mist the leaves, but do not spray too much, to avoid water droplets entering the leaf sheaths and causing internal rot.
3. Temperatures Too Low
Cause: Orchids prefer a warm climate. If the temperature is low and stays below 0°C for a long time, the plant can easily suffer cold damage, causing the leaf tips to turn black.
Solution: In winter, keep the orchid warm, with the temperature controlled between 10-15°C. If the indoor temperature is not high enough, you can cover it with plastic film. Spray a little water before covering, which can also help keep the leaf surface moist.
4. Waterlogged Roots and Rot
Cause: If you water the orchid too much and the potting soil is too wet or has standing water, bacteria can easily breed and cause disease, which leads to black leaf tips.
Solution: If there is standing water in the pot, first drain it out. Then take the plant out of the pot and check whether the roots have rotted. After cutting off the rotten roots, apply carbendazim to disinfect them. Then replant it in fresh, dry soil, and do not water after planting. Place it in a cool spot for care, and wait until it resumes growth before watering.
