What are the methods for disinfecting potting orchid substrate?

For orchids, the most important thing is the substrate. If the substrate is poor, it will affect the growth of the orchid, and if the substrate is not properly disinfected, it will make the orchid prone to various pests and diseases later on. Below are several substrate disinfection methods.
1. High-temperature disinfection method
Place the growing medium in a pot and steam it, or put it in a plastic bag and heat it in a microwave for 5 minutes, using high temperature to kill pathogens and insect eggs. However, this method is rather troublesome and is more suitable for disinfecting when the amount of growing medium is small.
2. Sun-exposure disinfection method
Spread the growing medium evenly on clean ground or wooden boards, expose it to sunlight, and regularly turn the growing medium so that it fully receives the sun, using the sun's ultraviolet rays to kill pathogens and insect eggs. After about 5-7 days, most pathogens and insect eggs can be killed. Although this method is not as thorough as the previous one, it is simple and convenient, and is more commonly used.
3. Potassium permanganate disinfection method
Place the growing medium in a large plastic bucket, pour through a 500-fold potassium permanganate solution, then cover with a lid. After two days, rinse with clean water and it can be used to grow orchids. This method is also relatively simple and easy to carry out.
4. Fungicide drenching method
Pour a diluted solution of the soil disinfectant fenaminosulf or a carbendazim solution thoroughly through the orchid growing medium, seal it for 24 hours, then put it in sunlight to dry.
It is equally suitable for disinfecting the potting soil of orchids already planted. When using it, drench the roots with this agent once every half a month, for 2 consecutive times, to prevent and control diseases.
