Orchid Fertilizing in Winter: Methods and Best Fertilizer Choices

How to Fertilize Orchids in Winter and What Fertilizer Is Best

Winter temperatures are very low, and orchids enter a dormant state. You can still fertilize at this time, but the plants do not need much fertilizer. If the temperature is normal, you can fertilize as usual; if the temperature is a bit low, reduce fertilization. For fertilizing, you can use organic fertilizer, quick-acting fertilizer, or spray foliar fertilizer on the plants.

1. Whether You Can Fertilize

In winter, orchids enter a dormant state, and at this time the plants do not need much fertilizer. Under normal circumstances, fertilization is needed. However, the amount of fertilizer must be reduced; fertilizing normally may cause fertilizer burn. If the growing environment is relatively warm, for example, at around 18-20°C, then you can still fertilize normally.

2. Fertilizing Methods

When fertilizing, you can use organic fertilizer or quick-acting fertilizer. For home growing, you can usually use bean cake fertilizer, or you can buy a special fertilizer. Also, during the winter you do not necessarily have to fertilize the soil; you can also spray some foliar fertilizer on the plants, and potassium dihydrogen phosphate will do.

3. Precautions

1. If the plant's roots are not healthy in winter, then do not fertilize it for now, because the plant itself already has problems; fertilizing it again will put a certain burden on the plant's roots.

2. If the temperature in the growing environment is too low, then you definitely must not fertilize it. Also, when it is too cold, you should pay attention to keeping it warm to prevent the plant from getting frost damage.
