What month is the ripening season for bayberry, and how to select the fruit

I. What month is the ripening season

Bayberry is a common fruit. The ripening season for the fruit is generally in the early summer, around May to June, so the time for harvesting and bringing it to market is about around the Dragon Boat Festival. In different regions, bayberry ripens at different times. In areas where the temperature rises quickly and is relatively high, the ripening and harvesting time for bayberry is slightly earlier; in some areas with lower temperatures, bayberry ripens a bit later. The specific ripening time depends on the local climate.

II. How to select

After bayberry comes on the market, you can go to the market to select and buy some. Because the outside of the bayberry is not covered by anything protective, it is not easy to store. When selecting, be sure to pay attention: choose those whose outer color is purplish red, which look relatively plump and not shriveled, with evenly distributed round spines on the outside.

Feel the firmness with your hand; it should be moderate, not especially soft. Bring it close and smell it with your nose; you should be able to detect a fresh, faintly fragrant scent. Avoid buying those that give off a faint alcoholic smell. Also check the lower end of the fruit to see whether there are purplish red marks; once juice has come out, it means it has been stored a bit too long. If conditions allow, you can wash it clean and taste it; this is a very direct way to select. After selecting and buying bayberry and taking it home, you can wash it clean first before eating.
