Cymbidium vs Phalaenopsis: differences and which is easier to grow

I. Differences between Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis

1. Different leaves: Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis both belong to the orchid family, but there are obvious differences. In terms of leaves, Cymbidium's leaves are yellow-green to dark green, while Phalaenopsis's leaves are green on the front and purple on the back, and are fleshy, so the two are very easy to tell apart by their leaves.

2. Different flowers: when in bloom, the flowers of the two also differ noticeably. When Cymbidium blooms, its inflorescence is relatively long, and the flower colors come in many kinds, commonly white, green, yellow, purplish red, etc. When Phalaenopsis blooms, its flowers look like butterflies and grow laterally at the base of the stem, with a peculiar appearance, so they can be distinguished by their flowers.

3. Different value: the difference between the two is also reflected in their value. Cymbidium looks more upright and is suitable for pot cultivation on a balcony, windowsill, or flower stand. Although Phalaenopsis is also highly ornamental, it has many flower colors and is often used for extensive hybridization to develop even more flower colors.

II. Which is easier to grow, Cymbidium or Phalaenopsis

The care methods for the two are almost the same, so the difficulty of growing them is the same, and neither is very easy to grow. When caring for them, pay attention to light, watering, and temperature. For light, give plenty of bright indirect light; do not overwater, keeping the soil slightly moist is enough. As for temperature, neither is cold-tolerant, so in winter the temperature must be controlled, otherwise they will suffer cold damage.
