How to care for orchids in winter, winter cultivation methods for orchids

As a fairly common plant in everyday life, orchids like to grow in shady environments, so they are relatively cold-tolerant and well suited to being kept at home. In winter, there is no need to worry that the plant will freeze to death. However, many people do not know how to care for orchids in winter, so the plants often wither during cultivation. Next, let's take a look at winter cultivation methods for orchids.

I. How to care for orchids in winter

Although orchids are plants from tropical regions, they are not drought-tolerant and are afraid of direct sunlight, so they like to grow in shady environments. The winter climate is therefore perfectly suited to orchid growth. You only need to keep them indoors, water and fertilize them appropriately, and maintain a well-ventilated growing environment, and the plants will grow lush and full of foliage.

However, the ambient temperature for the plants must not be too low, otherwise frost damage can occur. Generally speaking, it is best to keep the indoor temperature above 5°C. This can effectively prevent frost damage to the plants and is also conducive to normal plant growth.

II. Winter cultivation methods for orchids

1. Bring indoors and keep warm

Although orchids like to grow in shady environments, in winter they should not be placed indoors for cultivation. Generally speaking, it is best to grow them indoors and take good insulation measures. Only in this way can the plants safely get through the cold winter without suddenly suffering frost damage.

2. Control watering

“Do not let them dry out in summer and autumn, and do not let them stay wet in winter and spring.” This is the orchid-growing experience summarized by predecessors. In winter, orchids are mostly in a dormant state and need less water, so the potting soil only needs to be slightly moist. If the potting soil is indeed very dry, you can spray-water it around noon on a sunny day with water close to room temperature, keeping the potting soil slightly moist. For watering orchids, it is best to use rainwater or snow water. If tap water is used, it can be left to sit for two days before use.

3. Pest and disease control

In winter, the air is dry and pests and diseases occur less often. However, for indoor care, if the humidity is relatively high, this is not necessarily the case, so spray pesticides promptly according to the symptoms. During routine care, protective spraying should also be carried out. Using Bordeaux mixture to spray the potting soil and the ground around the pot can reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases the following year.

4. Ventilated environment

Orchids like a warm, humid environment with good air circulation. In northern indoor spaces where stoves are used for heating, the pots should be kept away from the stove fire. Around noon on sunny days, windows should be opened for ventilation, or the pots should be placed outdoors in a wind-sheltered, sunny spot.
