How to help clivia get through summer safely

Clivia is a fairly common orchid in China and a variety that is very popular among flower lovers. However, clivia generally grows at temperatures of 15-25°C; if the temperature exceeds 30°C, it enters a semi-dormant state, so the hot summer requires special attention for clivia. So how should you help clivia get through summer?

Clivia

1. Stop fertilizing: when the temperature is above 28°C, stop fertilizing, as clivia has already entered a dormant state; fertilizing will make the plant weak and leggy, lower its resistance, and cause root rot and stem rot. In early autumn, when the temperature drops below 25°C, you can apply 1 appropriate dose of well-rotted quick-acting fertilizer to break dormancy and promote earlier growth.

2. Water in moderation: once clivia enters its dormant period, its roots send less water up to the leaves, but because of the high temperature, the leaves still evaporate a great deal, so you should frequently spray more water on the surrounding ground, or spread a thick layer of sand on the ground, doing your best to keep the potting soil moist, but the humidity must not be too high, otherwise the roots rot easily.

3. Avoid direct strong light: it should be placed under a shade canopy or indoors, where a certain amount of scattered light is enough.

4. Improve its own resistance: before summer arrives, the last fertilizing should be based mainly on phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote robust growth.
