Many friends say that flowers which look perfectly healthy at the flower market develop yellow leaves or even die just a few days after being brought home. In fact, in many cases we simply aren't using the right methods to care for them. Lots of everyday household waste is natural fertilizer, and using it to grow flowers can achieve twice the result with half the effort.

Eggshells for growing flowers

Eggshells are fairly rich in minerals and trace elements, which can ensure healthy growth of potted plants and also drive away small crawling insects, especially those soft-bodied crawling creatures. When using eggshells normally, make sure they are washed clean and dried before use. Crushing them and sprinkling them on the soil works even better, and we can also mix eggshells into the potting soil, which works very well too.

We can also soak the crushed eggshells above in rice vinegar for one or two days, then dilute with water and use it to water and fertilize flowers with excellent results. The vinegar dissolves some of the nutrients in the eggshells into the vinegar solution, so plants can absorb the nutrients more easily.

Overnight tea

The vitamins contained in overnight tea can nourish potted plants. We can directly use overnight tea to water flowers, about twice a month, and it is a very good fertilizer especially for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, jasmine and gardenias. It can also help regulate the pH of the soil.

Okara for growing flowers

If we normally grind soy milk at home to drink, the leftover okara can be buried in the soil to ferment for a few days and then becomes organic fertilizer. You just need to mix the okara with soil, sprinkle on a little water, and then seal it well. Generally it will ferment in about a month and can then be used directly to grow flowers. During fermentation you can also put in a little fruit peel, such as orange peel, banana peel and so on, all of which work very well.
