What flowers are suitable for growing in Shanghai? A local flower selection guide
I. Climatic characteristics of Shanghai
Shanghai has a subtropical monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons, good light conditions and abundant rainfall. Compared with other regions, Shanghai's climate is mild and humid, with relatively short spring and autumn seasons and relatively long winter and summer seasons. However, there are not many days of sudden cold snaps in winter, nor many days above 35°C in summer, so for most of the plants we are familiar with, Shanghai is quite suitable for growing them.

II. What flowers are suitable for growing in Shanghai
1. In-ground planting: Generally speaking, in-ground plants are greatly affected by the regional environment. Given Shanghai's geographical location and climatic characteristics, it is relatively suitable to plant southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora), banana shrub (Michelia figo), Elaeocarpus sylvestris, palm, silk tree (Albizia julibrissin), camellia (Camellia japonica), osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans), elm-leaved spirea (Spiraea trilobata), ornamental peach (Prunus persica), crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica), redbud (Cercis chinensis), black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra), azalea (Rhododendron), sasanqua camellia (Camellia sasanqua), kerria (Kerria japonica), pittosporum (Pittosporum tobira), firethorn (Pyracantha), Hypericum, meadowsweet (Spiraea), gardenia, bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), lotus, Japanese iris (Iris ensata), purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), water lily, canna, iris, oxalis, red spider lily (Lycoris radiata), Aspidistra, petunia, marigold (Tagetes erecta), scarlet sage (Salvia splendens), pansy, pot marigold (Calendula officinalis), wax begonia (Begonia semperflorens-cultorum), verbena, French marigold (Tagetes patula), moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora), dahlia, cosmos, primrose, and so on.
2. Potted planting: Generally speaking, potted plants are less affected by the regional environment, and the care environment for flowers can be changed at any time according to weather conditions. For example, when the summer climate is hot, potted plants can be moved to a cool and ventilated place for care, and when the winter climate is cold, potted plants can be moved indoors to overwinter. Therefore, for most potted flowers, such as narcissus, hyacinth, Alocasia macrorrhizos, Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa), pothos (Epipremnum aureum), Caladium bicolor, and so on, they are all quite suitable for growing in Shanghai.
