Reasons why orchids grow flower buds but do not bloom, and how to solve it

What to do when an orchid grows flower buds but they will not open

After an orchid grows flower buds, first of all, make sure that the humidity, temperature, light and ventilation of the environment where the orchid is kept stay the same as before the buds appeared, and the air humidity should even be a little higher. As far as possible, do not let the temperature or humidity of the environment drop, or differ very noticeably.

Only then will the growth of the buds on the flower spike not be restricted. At the same time, the moisture of the potting medium should be increased appropriately, that is, the watering frequency can be raised a little. Also note that after the flower spike emerges and before the buds grow to the small budding stage, it is best not to use fertilizer, and especially do not spray foliar fertilizer or frequently spray water on the leaves. And make sure the environment where the orchid is kept has good ventilation and a suitable ambient temperature.

In addition, for some orchid varieties that undergo vernalization, such as: Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid), Cymbidium faberi (Hui orchid) and other varieties, during the low-temperature vernalization period, be sure not to adjust the temperature too high, and at the same time pay attention to the humidity of the environment and the moisture of the potting medium. During low-temperature vernalization, the humidity of the environment should generally be kept at about 60%, and the moisture of the potting medium should be kept at about 40%. The vernalization temperature should be kept between 0 and 10 degrees, and the vernalization time should generally be at least about 50 to 60 days.

Therefore, whether an orchid plant can open smoothly after growing flower buds mainly depends on ensuring that the environment where the orchid is kept has relatively high ambient humidity, a suitable temperature and good ventilation; you can place a water tray with some water under the flower pot to increase the air humidity. On the premise that the orchid's potting medium is still fairly moist, watering a little lightly on the surface of the pot will neither cause waterlogging damage to the orchid roots nor block the growth of the buds due to a lack of water in the medium. The buds will then open smoothly very quickly.
