What to Do When a Phalaenopsis Orchid's Flower Spike Has Too Many Branches and Doesn't Bloom

Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) is an orchid family plant that is very well suited to flower appreciation, with evergreen characteristics. It not only has a long flowering period, but also rich flower colors and very exquisite flower shapes, though its flowers usually grow on the upper part of the flower spike. And the top of the flower spike may also produce many branches, and the side shoots that branch out can still bloom.

However, for some growers, sometimes too many branches on the upper part of the flower spike is not necessarily a good thing, because the more branches there are, the more nutrients are consumed, so some branches may fail to bloom. So, what should be done?

Many growers might think that too many branches consume too many nutrients, and the nutrients are also too dispersed, thus causing the plant not to bloom. So they simply cut off some of the branches. Although cutting off some branches can concentrate the nutrients and make the remaining flower spike more likely to bloom, the number of flowers will be reduced.

And the purpose of growing flowers is naturally to hope the plant blooms abundantly and well, so cutting off the branches is generally not recommended. Instead, supplement nutrients through top dressing. This allows the branches to successfully differentiate flower buds, and then bloom smoothly.

But top dressing must be done before bud formation is complete. If the flower buds have matured, top dressing is not suitable, otherwise it can easily cause bud drop. So top dressing should be done early, supplementing enough nutrients before bud formation as much as possible.

To promote blooming in Phalaenopsis, you can usually apply some dilute monopotassium phosphate or Huaduoduo No. 2 to the plant, by drenching the roots or spraying the leaves. When nutrients are ensured, the branches of the Phalaenopsis can differentiate flower buds, form flower buds, and then bloom.
