How to Care for Christmas Cactus During the Bud Stage

During the bud stage of the Christmas cactus, it is best to apply 1 to 2 rounds of decomposed organic fertilizer as a top dressing, applied mainly along the edge of the pot. Once flower buds appear, stop fertilizing. Before flowering, maintain at least about 10 hours of light per day, keep the nighttime temperature at around 10°C, and if daytime light is insufficient, supplemental lighting can be provided at night.

1. Reasonable Fertilization

The Christmas cactus requires different fertilization at different growth stages. When flower buds form, suitable nutrients must also be provided. Before flowering, supplement the leaves with monopotassium phosphate fertilizer, and at this time also apply 1 to 2 rounds of decomposed organic fertilizer as a top dressing, applied mainly along the edge of the pot. After that, apply once every 10 days, and stop fertilizing once flower buds appear.

2. Suitable Light

The Christmas cactus is a typical short-day plant. It needs no less than about 9 hours of light per day to flower normally. Before flowering, it is best to appropriately increase light by 1 to 2 hours per day, which can speed up the formation of flower buds. If daytime sunlight is insufficient, use artificial lighting at night.

3. Temperature ControlTemperature is the main factor affecting whether the Christmas cactus blooms. Before flowering, the nighttime temperature should be kept at around 10°C. After flower buds form, the temperature can be raised to around 20 to 22°C, and the daytime temperature is best above 22°C. The temperature difference created in this way can make the plant bloom earlier and also promote the formation of flower buds.

4. Reasonable Watering

In autumn, watering should be done in moderation. Generally, water when the potting soil looks dry, and water promptly, otherwise the growth of flower buds will be affected. Before flowering, do not water too much. After flower bud differentiation is complete, the frequency of watering can be appropriately increased, following the principle of small amounts but frequent watering.
