What soil is best for growing orchids, and what soil mix options are there

Loam soil is very important for plant growth. Orchids require air permeability and good drainage, without waterlogging, and also a certain amount of nutrients, with the pH value kept on the lower side. Soft substrates are mainly composed of leaf mold, with granular soil, wood chips, coarse sand, etc. added. Hard substrates are mainly composed of granular materials, mixed with a certain amount of loam. A soft-hard mix can also be used, with larger particles placed at the bottom.

I. What soil to use for cultivation

Loam soil is very important for plant growth and is the foundation of growth. Its soil requirements are air permeability and good drainage, without waterlogging, and it must also contain a certain amount of nutrients to sustain growth. The pH value should be kept on the lower side, and it must not be too sticky or compacted, otherwise water will find it hard to penetrate and nutrients cannot be guaranteed, so that the roots can grow healthily in it.

II. Soil mix options

1. Soft substrate: the main component is leaf mold, to which granular soil, wood chips, and coarse sand can be added. This mix ensures looseness, air permeability, and a certain amount of nutrients. When mixed this way, it should hold together when squeezed tightly in the hand and crumble apart on its own when the hand is opened.

2. Hard substrate: the main component is granular material. Pebbles, crushed brick granules, and rotten wood chunks can be mixed with a certain amount of loam. This fully ensures air permeability and drainage, and there will be no waterlogging.

3. Soft-hard mix: add crushed brick granules to leaf mold and sandy loam. When using, note that larger particles go at the bottom and finer substrate on top.
