How to tell whether a Clivia is short on fertilizer

Clivia (Clivia miniata) is a flower we often grow in our homes. Its glossy leaves make it very ornamental, and its blooms are even more imposing and rich-looking. But if it is not grown well, the leaves turn yellow and flowering becomes difficult. To grow it into good condition, fertilizing is a key point. Recently a flower-loving friend asked: how do you tell if a Clivia is short on fertilizer? Today I will teach you one identification method.

How to tell if a Clivia is short on fertilizer? Just look at the leaves

To tell whether a Clivia is short on fertilizer, we only need to observe its leaves. If the leaves are glossy and the veins are deep and thick, then naturally it is not short on fertilizer. On the contrary, if the leaves are thin, dull and lusterless, the leaf tips turn yellow, and the width of the newly grown small leaves is clearly narrower than the old leaves, then there is no doubt: your Clivia needs fertilizing.

Fertilizing a Clivia must be targeted

Fertilizing a Clivia cannot be done blindly; we must be targeted. First we need to understand which element it lacks, so we can apply that one with focus. As for which fertilizer it lacks specifically, we can judge based on the conditions that appear during growth.

1. Nitrogen deficiency. If it lacks nitrogen fertilizer, the Clivia plant will show slow growth and poor development, and the lower leaves will turn yellow and dry up.

2. Potassium deficiency. A Clivia lacking potassium fertilizer will show weak roots, yellow leaves with spots, and small flowers.

3. Phosphorus deficiency. Phosphorus fertilizer promotes flowering; a lack of phosphorus fertilizer will cause failure to flower or poor flowering, dull colors, and dark green leaves.

4. Iron deficiency. If it lacks the element iron, the new leaves will appear yellow-white, and the leaves will turn yellow and curl.

In daily care we can give Clivia these fertilizers

1. Homemade organic fertilizer

The growth of Clivia cannot do without the three key elements nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and it is best to choose organic fertilizers. For example, bean cake, castor seeds, soybeans, hemp seeds, forest and other oil crops contain more nitrogen. Things like bone meal, fish scales, rice bran and poultry manure contain relatively high phosphorus. Those with relatively high potassium include plant ash, charcoal, and straw ash. After fermentation and decomposition, these can all become very good organic fertilizers.

2. Fertilizers on the market

If you find that troublesome, we can also buy compound fertilizer and use it together with a general-purpose microbial inoculant flower fertilizer. The microbial inoculant is rich in highly active beneficial bacteria; after application it rapidly multiplies and grows in the soil, releasing and activating various elements inherently present in the soil such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and iron, providing nutrients for the Clivia. It can also metabolize, degrade and transform pollutants in the soil, reducing and eliminating the toxicity of pollutants, purifying the soil, and enhancing the stress resistance of the Clivia. In addition, you can usually spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate, which can make the leaves even more lush green and beautiful.
