How to grow orchids indoors in the north with heating

On the question of orchids overwintering in the east, my personal advice: as long as it does not freeze, do not bring them indoors. Reasons: 1. Orchids first need vernalization, and secondly they need to go through severe cold to be more robust the following year. After low temperatures, the orchid's buds differentiate better. 2. Heated rooms are too dry, and moisture cannot be controlled; it is both dry and stuffy. Last year I had a plant I had grown for over ten years knocked out by the heat steaming. Water: in the south it is weakly acidic, in the north it is alkaline.

Air humidity, this is the most critical point. The south has high air humidity; the north is dry. In the south you do not need to take protective measures; as long as there is a shady spot it is fine. The north is not like that. Summer is still manageable, just cool it down; in winter the heating will quickly dry out the orchids, and simply increasing air humidity artificially just does not work. I have done experiments: in a large greenhouse with protective measures, growing them together with other southern plants is fine, but keeping them at home alone is very difficult.

Regarding temperature difference, it is generally believed that the day-night temperature difference for orchids should be around 10 degrees, which is most suitable for converting the carbon dioxide absorbed during the day into nutrients, and at night releasing energy through oxidation to synthesize the needed substances, such as enzymes, sugars, media, etc. So having a temperature difference is also very important. When heating is on in the north there is no temperature difference, so in this respect it may be somewhat inferior to the south.

Temperatures that are too high or too low are both unfavorable for orchid growth. The optimal air temperature for vegetative growth of orchids is between 20-25°C; below 15°C they enter reproductive growth.

It is recommended to increase humidity in a heated room, open the windows for ventilation at noon, and if the temperature is too high, cool it down. Do not place orchids near the radiator; keep them away from the radiator. In this environment orchids definitely cannot undergo vernalization. If you want vernalization, put the orchids outside on the balcony, but be careful to prevent frost damage when the temperature drops.
